ワシントンD.C.出身のバロック・トランペット奏者、ジョシュ・コーエンのChandosデビュー盤。コーエンは、ターフェルムジーク・バロック管弦楽団、ワシントン・バッハ・コンソート、モントリオール古楽スタジオ、アポロズ・ファイアなど、北米の古楽器アンサンブルや古楽器オーケストラの首席奏者やソリストとして共演するなど、北米で最も人気のあるクラリーノ(トランペット)奏者のひとりとして活躍しています。
これまでにアンサンブル・カプリスとの共演で、高い演奏技術を要するブランデンブルク協奏曲の録音を残しているコーエン。Chandosデビューを飾る本アルバムでは、17世紀後半から18世紀半ばにかけて作曲されたバロック・トランペットのための幅広いレパートリーを取り上げています。現在のバルブやピストンが開発される遥か以前、1500年代から使用されるようになったとされるバロック・トランペットは、モダン・トランペットが誕生する1800年代後期にかけて、宗教作品、オーケストラ作品、独奏作品と多岐にわたり用いられました。バルブ機構が存在しないため、倍音以外の音を出すための唇の絶妙なコントロールなど、より高い演奏技術が求められるこの楽器を、現代のヴィルトゥオーゾの妙技で華々しく奏でます。

Some of the terminology here may be unfamiliar outside the trumpet realm. There is not an instrument called a "high Baroque trumpet"; rather, the album title refers to a Baroque trumpet played in its high overtone or clarino register. (The latter term has also been the subject of centuries of confusion.) This release by Baroque trumpeter Josh Cohen and the small Ensemble Sprezzatura features sounds from a natural valveless trumpet that are not often heard. The booklet notes open entertainingly with a quotation from musicologist Thurston Dart, claiming that "to obtain these very high harmonics (the clarino register) from a natural trumpet makes such merciless demands on a players lips and lungs that the special technique required has long fallen into disuse and there seems little chance of its ever being revived." Cohen not only revives it but gets highly listenable results. He is one of a group of players, at first mostly American, who have cultivated not only the playing technique but the repertory that goes with it, much of it German and most of it unknown. For the full effect, sample the high Cs in several movements of the Sinfonia a 7 of Johann Samuel Endler. Another highlight is the Concerto in D major for trumpet, two oboes, and continuo, TWV 43:D7 of Telemann, where the continuo group includes a bassoon, and Telemann gets delightful sonorities out of this rather unwieldy group. The backing from Ensemble Sprezzatura under director Daniel Abraham is lively and sensitive to the soloists challenges. Brass players may be especially alert to the technical rigors involved in Cohens playing, but any Baroque enthusiast will find this a diverting release that brings home just how far trumpet playing has advanced over the last 50 years. ~ James Manheim
