Never Going Under＜限定盤/White Vinyl＞

前作『サッド・ハッピー』はUKチャートの4位を記録。常にサウンドを発展させ、イギリスで最も影響力があり、愛されるギター・バンドのひとつとなったサーカ・ウェーヴスが、5枚目のアルバム『ネヴァー・ゴーイング・アンダー』をリリース。

Circa Wavesは5枚目のアルバム『Never Going Under』を2023年1月13日、Lower Third / PIASよりリリースする。待望の新作となる当作品は、過去10年間におけるCirca Wavesの上昇気流を凝縮したものだ。イギリスで最も影響力があり、愛されているギター・バンドのひとつとなったこの4人組は、常に自分たちのサウンドを発展させることに専念。アルバムのチャートはますます高い位置を確保し、熱心なファンを増やし続けてきた。そして、彼らの最新のステージである『Never Going Under』も、バンドが新たな領域へ挑戦し続け、シーンにおけ自らの地位を無理なく確立していることを明白にする内容へと仕上がっている。「アルバムでは、僕らの子供達が30年後にどんな世界にいるかわからない、という現代ならではの現象について語っている。物理的にも、環境的にも、政治的にも、僕らは完全に未知の世界にいる。それは、皆を恐怖に陥れるが、帰するところ、僕らは決して未来をあきらめることができない、ということも知ってる。『Never Going Under』は、私たちが現在感じている恐怖と、それを乗り越えるために必要な回復力のスナップショットだ」と、アルバムについて、フロントマンのKieran Shudallは語る

Circa Wavesは英リバプールで結成されたインディ・ロック・バンドだ。メンバーはKieran Shudall(Vo)、Joe Falconer(G)、Sam Rourke(B)、 Colin Jones(Dr)の4人で、2013年にシングル「Get Away」でデビュー。その後、Temples、Interpol、Royal Blood等とNME Awards Tourをおこない、知名度を上げていった。2015年にデビュー・アルバム『Young Chasers』をリリース。2017年の『Different Creatures』、2019年の『What's It Like Over There?』を経て、2020年には4枚目のアルバム『Sad Happy』リリース。UKチャートの4位を記録した。

Liverpools Circa Waves have built a career around writing songs that get you dancing while also pushing you to the verge of tears. Its a dichotomously cathartic vibe they brought to full flower on 2020s Sad Happy, and one that again drives their often moving fifth album, 2023s Never Going Under. Centered on singer/songwriter Kieran Shudall, Circa Waves make earnest yet still wryly delivered songs that are equal parts 90s-style Britpop and early-2000s post-punk -- think Blur meets the Killers meets the Strokes and youll get a good sense of the bands sound here. What sets them apart from their influences is Shudalls knack for weaving what feels like his own personal experience into relatable anthems that capture the moment. If Sad Happy was about the ennui of hitting ones thirties, then Never Going Under is about becoming a parent and worrying about what the future may bring to you and your family, especially in the wake of a worldwide pandemic, ever-increasing environmental concerns, and widespread political unrest -- all themes that Shudall wrestles with here. However, where Sad Happy was stylistically rangy with an underpinning of instrumental experimentation, Never Going Under is the most direct and nervy Circa Waves have sounded since 2015s Young Chasers. Heralding the zeitgeisty vibes is "Hell on Earth," a crackling dance-rock anthem in the vein of Blurs "Song 2" thats shot through with a pyrrhic, throw-your-hands-in-the-air surrender. The song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of a world slipping away in front of your eyes as Shudall sings, "And everyones unhealthy and no ones getting laid/And when I bump into my friends, I dont know what to say." Emotionally gutting yet somehow intensely thrilling moments pop up elsewhere, as on the sparkling, U2-esque "Carry You Home," in which Shudall reaches for a bit of light in dark times, admitting, "I watch the world fall/As my son begins to crawl/Oh, I hope he sees it all." Its that distinctly human sense of discovery and the yearning for a better tomorrow, even as the world crumbles around you, that Circa Waves capture on Never Going Under. ~ Matt Collar

全英チャート4位を記録して各方面で評判の高かった前作『Sad Happy』から約2年ぶりとなる通算5枚目のアルバム。今回は4人によるソリッドなバンド・サウンドが十二分に楽しめつつ、先行シングル"Carry You Home"を筆頭にエレクトロニックな要素を巧みに採り入れた曲に新境地を感じ取れる。キャッチーでフックの効いたメロディーもさらに磨きがかかっており、ブリティッシュ・ビート好きにはたまらない作品だ。
