ドヴォルザークの交響曲第7&8番

ファビオ・ルイージの後任として2021/22シーズンよりチューリッヒ歌劇場の音楽監督を務めているジャナンドレア・ノセダ。先日、契約期間を2027/28シーズン終了までと延長を発表。就任から充実の関係を築いている両者初のディスクがリリースされます。
ノセダがチューリヒとの最初の演奏会で選んだプログラムは、ドヴォルザークの交響曲第8番。この作品は、夏の間に避暑として過ごしていたボヘミアの小さな村ヴィソカで作曲されました。ドヴォルザークは、このヴィソカの自然豊かで美しい情景に触発され、交響曲第8番をはじめ《ルサルカ》や《アルミーダ》などの数々の名作を生み出しています。またアメリカで国際的成功を収めた後も、ここヴィソカの別荘で晩年を過ごしたといいます。交響曲第8番は、ヴィソカでの幸福感に満ちた生活を表すかのように、明るくボヘミアの抒情に溢れた作品となっています。ノセダは、均整の取れた調和的な響きを保ちつつ、メリハリの利いた表現で楽曲を華やかに締めくくっています。
そしてカップリングには、別日に演奏された同じくドヴォルザークの交響曲第7番。ドヴォルザークの後期三大交響曲の中で最初の作品となりますが、第8番が「陽」とすれば第7番は「陰」。ブラームスの交響曲第3番を意識して作曲したと言われ、シンフォニックな重厚感とボヘミアの民族的な雰囲気を感じられる作品です。ノセダとチューリヒの演奏は、厚みのある響きの中にも、美しく透明感のある音色で自然な流れを作っています。またノセダの楽曲を深く読み込んだ多彩な表現の数々は、新鮮な驚きがあり何度も聴きたくなる演奏です。

These live recordings of Dvořaks Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, and Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Op. 70, were made by the Philharmonia Zurich early in the tenure of new music director Gianandrea Noseda, who has also taken up the reins at the Zurich Opera House. In fact, the recording of the exuberant Eighth was taken from his very first performance with the group. There is no issue here of breaking anyone in, and the performances are of such high quality that one might wonder just how much better they can get. The Symphony No. 8 is especially strong. Consider the lambent string tone in the first movement and how carefully and lovingly Noseda shapes the phrases there. The finale totally avoids the squarish quality heard in so many performances, which probably prompted Brahms critique of the work as unfocused; here, everything builds nicely toward the big dancelike theme and its blaring trombones. The Symphony No. 7 is hardly less effective; Noseda seems to draw an unspoken narrative from its dramatic shifts. None of this would have been as vivid as it is without the superb sound engineering from the Philharmonias in-house label (which is also fairly new); there is little surplus noise of any kind, and the sound is immediate and lively. This is a major release from an orchestra that remains a bit underrated despite its illustrious history. ~ James Manheim
