Rather than sue artists that run a little too close to his style, rapper Playboi Carti has instead began to monetize them; his Opium label is a collection of the derisively named “Carti clones,” each offering their own take on the bolshie, scattered style that made him famous. The latest of these clones to pick up steam is Atlanta-based Destroy Lonely, a rapper with little identifying information except the viral success of his singles.
At 19 tracks, Lonelys first tape for Opium, No Stylist, is a series of boast-centered anthems, anchoring Lone’s Auto-Tune-heavy verses to minimal versions of the subgenre’s iconic "rage beats". Frequent collaborator Clayco offers typical productions throughout the track’s closing run -- the scratchy “Veteran,” the airy “Crystlcstles” -- while the Cxdy/Chef9thegod combo provide particularly impressive instrumentals to “No Stylist” and “Turnin Up,” the latter a camera-flash masterwork of bouncing synths. Matching Lonelys moody aesthetic, these productions serve their purpose well, proving a gloomier counterpart to the genre’s typically explosive ethos.
Across the project Lonely demonstrates his vocal versatility, inhabiting numerous voices as he looks to cement his staple sound. Alongside the existing hit of "No Stylist," the rapper finds strong pockets on the dancing "Turnin Up" and the thrashing "Veteran," the latter a link-up with close collaborator and fellow Opium frontrunner Ken Carson. A guitar-driven final stretch adds a new dimension to the rappers sound, providing a crisp contrast to the more electronically driven sonics of his work thus far. Fans of the Opium collective -- and the subgenre overall -- will find plenty here to keep their playlists stocked. ~ TiVo Staff
