It is unusual to see purely avant-garde music, from the small label NMC, make the best-seller charts, but that is what happened in late 2022 with this group of three works by composer Rebecca Saunders. This is avant-garde music that crossover fans might avoid, yet an open mind will find it distinctive and invigorating. One of the works here, void (2013), was inspired by playwright Samuel Beckett, and indeed, the general aesthetic might be likened to that of the Irish playwright. Saunders writes music that seems to exist on the edge of silence but where the musical utterances are sharply detailed, even piercing. Two of the three sizable works here are instrumental, and much of the music that Saunders has written for voices avoids specific text. However, Skin (2015), which also incorporates text by Beckett and others, is texted, with scraps of barely intelligible words gradually cohering over the works 27-plus minutes. It is quite absorbing stuff. The performances are by various artists -- Skin by its dedicatee, Klangforum Wien -- but they are uniformly good, seemingly with a shared sense of purpose. Try this music; it may be very rewarding. ~ James Manheim
