ミシェル・コルボの叔父アンドレア・コルボが指導した名聖歌隊による、新しい編曲と透明で温かみに溢れたクリスマス音楽集

ジュネーブのシンボル、サン=ピエール寺院に所属する聖歌隊《サン=ピエール=オ=リアン・ドゥ・ビュール聖歌隊》は、名合唱指揮者ミシェル・コルボの叔父アンドレア・コルボが指導していた合唱団であり、1972年録音の名盤のコルボ指揮による「フォーレ:レクイエム」でも、その清らかな歌声で魅了しました。この聖歌隊によるクリスマス・アルバムは、1969年エラートに録音していました。この2022年録音盤では、若き作曲家・編曲家たちのマーティン・バチェラー、サミュエル・ペッグ、ジェローム・クーン、ネイサン・ストルネッタが、これらの昔から歌われるキャロルなどを、豪華で新たな深みと情緒を与える編曲を行い、清い少年少女合唱の声と共にリスナーに寄せ合うようなクリスマス音楽をお届けします。

Most Warner Classics/Erato releases are expansively marketed, with charismatic young artists just on the edge of stardom. This release by the Swiss childrens choir La Maitrise de Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Bulle and the Prague Symphonic Ensemble has neither of these characteristics; it is a budget release, just 33-odd minutes long, with generic graphics, featuring little-known musicians. It also happens to be lovely, with fresh, rather lush arrangements by Martin Batchelar and others of familiar carols. Most of these are in French, which may not be notable to the Erato labels core audience, but others will be pleased to discover these just slightly unusual versions of the pieces. La Maitrise de Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Bulle is not one of Europes "name" childrens choirs, but they acquit themselves very well here. The choristers range in age from eight to 16, and they number 48; the result is an ensemble with the classic childrens choir sound but more meat than English or French cathedral-attached groups and an ability to vary the texture according to what theyre singing. Conductor Jerome Kuhn leads both La Maitrise de Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Bulle and the Prague Symphonic Ensemble, and the two groups fuse well under his baton. Those in search of an unusual holiday item at a low cost should give this release a spin. ~ James Manheim
