真のオリジネイターにしてヘヴィ・メタルの始祖、ブラック・サバス。ロニー・ジェイムス・ディオをヴォーカルに擁したブラック・サバスの2作目となる、1981年発表の傑作『MOB RULES』が、2枚組エディションとなってBMGより登場! オリジナル・アルバムの2021年リマスター音源に加え、1981年12月31日から1982年1月2日にかけてロンドンのハマースミス・オデオンで行われた公演のライヴ音源や、1982年のポートランド公演の模様を収録したライヴ音源など、多数のボーナス・トラックを収録!

1970年に衝撃のデビューを果たし、そのオカルト的なサウンドで世界中から絶大な支持を得、その後の音楽シーンの様相を一変させるほどの影響力と共に世界を呑み込んでいった、イギリスはバーミンガムが生んだ絶対的帝王、ブラック・サバス。彼らが鳴らすサウンドは「ハード・ロック」よりも激しく重いサウンドとして「ヘヴィ・メタル」と呼ばれ、現在にも脈々と続く全てのヘヴィ・ミュージックに絶大な影響を与え、「彼らがいなければその後のヘヴィ・ミュージック・シーンはなかった」とまで言われる、真のオリジネイターでありヘヴィ・メタルの創始者だ。

1979年のオジー・オズボーンのバンド脱退を受け、新たに当時エルフやレインボーなどで活躍していた絶対的フロントマン、ロニー・ジェイムス・ディオをヴォーカリストに迎え入れた以降も名盤の数々をこの世に生み落としてきたブラック・サバスだが、今回、ロニー・ジェイムス・ディオ期の作品がBMGよりリイシューされることとなった。今回登場するのは、ロニー・ジェイムス・ディオ加入後に発表した、歴史的名盤として名高い1980年のアルバム『HEAVEN AND HELL』と、翌1981年に発表した傑作『MOB RULES』の、2枚組リイシュー作品だ。共にオリジナル・アルバムの2021年リマスター音源に加え、様々なボーナス・トラックを追加収録したものとなっており、2枚組CDと2枚組アナログ盤でそれぞれ発売される。

1981年10月にリリースされ、ゴールド・ディスクに認定されたこの『MOB RULES』は、「The Sign Of The Southern Cross」や「Turn Up The Night」、そしてアルバム・タイトル曲「The Mob Rules」といった代表曲を収録した、メタルの名盤として広く知られる作品だ。また、新たにドラマーにヴィニー・アピスが加入したことも話題となった。

今回2枚組作品となってリイシューされる『MOB RULES』には、多数のレア音源や未発表音源などが収録されている。『BLACK SABBATH: LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ODEON』からの音源に加え、「The Mob Rules」の2021年ミックス・ヴァージョン音源や、1982年にオレゴン州ポートランドで開催されたパフォーマンスの全てを収録しているのも、特筆すべきポイントだ。このポートランド公演では、「Neon Knights」や「Heaven And Hell」、「Voodoo」といった楽曲の素晴らしいパフォーマンスが収録されている。

1981s Mob Rules was the second Black Sabbath album to feature vertically challenged singer Ronnie James Dio, whose powerful pipes and Dungeons and Dragons lyrics initially seemed like the perfect replacement for the recently departed and wildly popular Ozzy Osbourne. In fact, all the ingredients which had made their first outing, Heaven and Hell, so successful are re-utilized on this album, including legendary metal producer Martin Birch (Deep Purple, Whitesnake, etc.) and supporting keyboard player Geoff Nichols. And while it lacks some of its predecessors inspired songwriting, Mob Rules was given a much punchier, in-your-face mix by Birch, who seemed re-energized after his work on New Wave of British Heavy Metal upstarts Iron Maidens Killers album. Essentially, Mob Rules is a magnificent record, with the only serious problem being the sequencing of the material, which mirrors Heaven and Hells almost to a tee. In that light, one cant help but compare otherwise compelling tracks like Turn Up the Night and Voodoo to their more impressive Heaven and Hell counterparts, Neon Knights and Children of the Sea. That streak is soon snapped, first by the unbelievably heavy seven-minute epic The Sign of the Southern Cross, which delivers one of the albums best moments, then its segue into an unconventional synthesizer-driven instrumental (E5150) and the appearance of the roaring title track. Side two is less consistent, hiding the awesome Falling off the Edge of the World (perhaps the most overlooked secret gem to come from the Dio lineup) amongst rather average tracks like Slipping Away and Over and Over. Over the next year, the wheels fell off for Black Sabbath, and Dios exit marked Mob Rules as the last widely respected studio release of the bands storied career. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
