With just about every hit-making alternative band listing the Bad Brains as a top influence by the early-'90s (Living Colour, Soundgarden, Beastie Boys, Jane's Addiction, etc.), guitarist Dr. Know attempted to resurrect the then-defunct band. The only other member of the original lineup willing to go along with Dr, Know was bassist Daryl Jennifer, so the pair put together a new Bad Brains lineup, consisting of singer Israel Joseph and drummer Mackie Jayson, and the band was promptly signed to Epic. On 1993's RISE, the classic Bad Brains sound is alive on "Miss Freedom," "Free," a cover of Larry Graham's "Hair," and the title track.
