A year after he released an album of mutated footwork on Planet Mu, Sasu Ripatti launched his own Rajaton label and debuted yet another alias, Ripatti Deluxe, with the full-length Speed Demon. His cited inspirations for the release include early rave and happy hardcore, styles that couldnt be further away from his dub techno abstractions as Vladislav Delay. Much like his later Delay work, though, this record is intense and noisy, filled with mangled loops eating each other alive. Several tracks are whirlwinds of gabber kicks and jungle breaks, with ragga vocals and other shredded voices poking out through the mix. "Radio King" approximates the jittery beats of footwork, and "Speed Breathe" is a saturated grindcore banger with heavy, stretched-out bass. Nearly all of Ripattis work seems to defy logic -- simply nobody else approaches rhythm the same way he does -- but this album is completely absurd even by his standards.
