カントリー・ミュージック界の大御所であるアメリカン・ミュージック・レジェンド=ドリー・パートンが、マイケル・ブーブレ、ウィリー・ネルソン、マイリー&ビリー・レイ・サイラスなど豪華な友人たちをゲストに迎え制作した、世界を明るく楽しく照らす2020年発表のホリデイ・アルバム『A HOLLY DOLLY CHRISTMAS』に8曲のボーナス・トラックを追加収録した、アルティメット・デラックス・エディションが登場!

世界的スーパースターにして、カントリー・ミュージック界の大御所であるアメリカン・ミュージック・レジェンド、ドリー・パートン。シンガー・ソングライター、女優、実業家、篤志家などマルチに活躍し、1967年のアルバム・デビュー以来50年以上に亘り、数年に1枚のペースでアルバムを発表し続けている彼女が2020年に発表した、グラミー賞ノミネート・アルバム『A HOLLY DOLLY CHRISTMAS』が、アルティメット・デラックス・エディションとなって登場することとなった!

2020年10月に発表した『A HOLLY DOLLY CHRISTMAS』は、全米トップ・カントリー・アルバム・チャートと全米トップ・ホリデイ・アルバム・チャートで堂々の首位を獲得し、第63回グラミー賞で「ベスト・トラディショナル・ポップ・ヴォーカル・アルバム」部門にノミネートされるなど、非常に高い評価を受けたホリデイ・アルバムとなった。マイケル・ブーブレやビリー・レイ・サイラス、マイリー・サイラス、ジミー・ファロン、そしてウィリー・ネルソンといった豪華ゲスト・アーティストとの共演した楽曲を多数収録する今作からは、「Mary, Did You Know?」や「I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus」、「Christmas On The Square」、そしてトップ10ヒット曲となったブーブレとのデュエット「Cuddle Up, Cozy Down Christmas」といったシングルが生まれている。

今回登場するのは、そのヒット・ホリデイ・アルバムに8曲ものボーナス・トラックを追加収録した豪華エディション、『A HOLLY DOLLY CHRISTMAS (ULTIMATE DELUXE EDITION)』だ。今年のホリデイ・シーズンをさらに素敵に彩ってくれる作品が、今ドリーから世界に届けられるのだ。

今回追加収録されるのは、今回が初の公式音源化となる、ドリー・パートンが主演を務めた1986年のホリデイ映画『A SMOKY MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS』でフィーチャーされていた「A Smoky Mountain Christmas」と「(I'd Like To Spend) Christmas With Santa」、そして「Wrapped Up In You」という3曲に加え、2020年のオリジナル発売時にデジタル限定のボーナス・トラックとして公開されていた「Three Candles」と「The Wish Book」の2曲(初CD化音源)、1997年のアニメーション・ホリデイ映画『ANNABELLE'S WISH』のドリーが提供していた「Something Bigger Than Me」と「Silent Night」の2曲、そして、ロッド・スチュワートのグラミー賞受賞アルバム『STARDUST... THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK, VOLUME III』にも収録されていたドリーとロッドのデュエット曲「Baby It's Cold Outside」。

Given her ebullient spirit and the overall length and breadth of her catalog, it seems like Dolly Parton would -- like so many of her country peers -- have turned out a half-dozen or so Christmas albums by this point. She in fact has only two, a 1984 collaborative set with Kenny Rogers and a fairly standard 1990 album heavy on traditional carols. Returning to the Yuletide arena 30 years later, Parton is now a bona fide international icon credited in the 2019 NPR podcast series Dolly Partons America as being a great unifier within an exceedingly divided nation. As with most things, she takes such pressures in stride, and with little left to prove offers up a heartfelt, compassionate, and joyous cup of holiday cheer on A Holly Dolly Christmas. Of course, the Johnny Marks-written Burl Ives classic A Holly Jolly Christmas opens the set with a typically folksy mid-song explanation from Dolly about how much she loves the song and how she eventually decided why not do a whole album and call it A Holly Dolly Christmas. Unlike her previous holiday-themed album, Home for Christmas, this set is loaded with Parton originals, some of which are quite good. The cheerful Appalachian romp of Christmas in the Square is classic old-time Dolly, while the sweet Michael Buble duet Cuddle Up, Cozy Down Christmas has the playful spirit of a jazz standard. High-profile guests abound ranging from Jimmy Fallon (on Mariah Careys All I Want for Christmas Is You) and both Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus (on separate songs) to Willie Nelson (Nelsons own classic Pretty Paper) and Dollys younger brother Randy Parton. Stylistically, she revisits classic sounds while moving easily between contemporary countrys pop and organic elements, all the while chatting and laughing with her duet partners and delivering to those who need it an undemanding and likeable Christmas album. ~ Timothy Monger
