Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot coined the term "digital hardcore" and later used it as the name of his record label, an appropriate term for the fusion of hardcore techno with the politicized, anti-fascist ethos and directness of punk's first wave. DELETE YOURSELF (1995), itself a contemporaneous reissue-repackaging of their debut, originally entitled 1995, begins with "Start the Riot"--a straightforward call to arms, commanding the listener to just what the title suggests, over an almost comically unrelenting beat. Most of the album's tracks follow a similar blueprint: recognizable samples ("Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Funky Drummer," and a take on Sham 69's classic "If the Kids are United") are tossed into the pot with the brutal hardcore techno that the members of ATR had weaned themselves on in their native Berlin. Rave tempos combined with crunchy punk guitars and snotty vocal might not look like a happy marriage on paper, but the band makes the mash-up work. ATR wears its political rhetoric shamelessly on its sleeve, but while one could argue that the message is slightly facile, this kind of music was never known for its subtlety.
