Some things are so much of their place that you have to wonder why this British album was ever released in the U.S. It's the American version of the band's English Soundtrack release, note for note the same. While it possessed a certain stoned charm upon its release, it hasn't worn well. Formed by a group of students at Exeter University, the lyrics are full of quasi-Shakespearian and Renaissance allusions, while the music frequently hints at madrigals with touches of rock, but never settles in one place. Organic in the very best way, it's one of those things where a good idea is stretched and teased out far beyond its useful life ("The Death of Don Quixote" is a prime example) by smart minds. As a nostalgic memento it certainly has its place, but as an album to be heard time and again -- no. ~ Chris Nickson
