ヴィセンテ・ルシターノ: モテット集

ヨーロッパ初の黒人作曲家?
端正な多声書法の奥深さを、英国随一のア・カペラ集団の演奏で

イベリア半島からイスラム教徒の支配地が一掃され、ヨーロッパがルネサンス最盛期へと向かう16世紀。当時は世界的大帝国だったポルトガルもすぐれた文化人を多く輩出し、精緻なポリフォニー音楽を紡ぎ出す作曲家も多く現れましたが、本盤の主人公ヴィセンテ・ルシターノ(この呼称は「ポルトガルのヴィセンテ」という意味に過ぎず、本名はまだ突きとめられていません)はそうした時代に諸国をまたにかけ活躍した天才の一人。しかも記録によれば母方の祖先はアフリカ系で、ヨーロッパで楽譜を出版した最古の黒人作曲家とも目されています。晩年はプロテスタントに改宗しシュトゥットガルトの宮廷ともコンタクトを取った形跡があるものの、音楽活動の大半はローマ・カトリックの教会音楽世界で行われ、理論家・作曲家としての評判はローマ教皇庁の中枢部にまで及んでいました。現存する唯一の曲集『第一小品集 Liber primus epigramatum』は1551年ローマで刊行されており、本盤ではそこから10曲の名品を厳選。歌詞の聴き取りやすさを保ちながらも、4声の緊密さから8声のボリューム感までア・カペラの魅力が尽きません。パレストリーナやラッスス、ヴィラールト、ヴィチェンティーノら同時代の大物たちの傍ら、多くの人を魅了した格調高いポリフォニーの綾を、古楽に名盤が多い英国随一のレーベルDELPHIANで大活躍をみせてきたマリアン・コンソートの精緻な歌唱で聴けるのは大きな喜びと言えるでしょう。

Vicente Lusitano (1520 [?]-1561 [?]) is often referred to as the first published Black composer. The evidence for this is a bit thinner than one would like; no image of Lusitano exists, but one historian referred to him as a pardo, or mulatto. The name Lusitano simply means "Portuguese." Whatever the case, his music was somewhat obscured by his work as a theorist; he was a participant in a Rome debate over contrapuntal technique with Nicola Vicentino in 1551. Lusitano was judged to have won the debate, but Vicentinos positions seemed to point toward the innovations of the late 16th century, and it is Vicentino who is known today. This is a shame, for as a listen to the motet Heu me, Domine shows, Lusitano was as capable of extreme chromaticism as anyone. The rest of the music includes typical specimens of the style of the middle 16th century, dense and intricate rather than spare and transparent like Josquin. In fact, several of the works here would be ideal for courses in the music of the era, for they are elaborations, "parody motets," if you will, of motets by Josquin. Sample the final Inviolata, integra, et casta es, which is based on a famous Josquin motet readily available on streaming media; much of the original is audible, but the effect is entirely different. The Marian Consort does well with this rather intricate music; it is a small group that produces a majestic effect without losing any of the detail.
