Producer, songwriter, designer, and educator Suzi Analogue launched Never Normal Records in 2013, after her music proved to be too uncategorizable for any existing record label. First known as a member of the Klipmode collective along with experimental hip-hop producers Knxwledge, Mndsgn, and Devonwho, her music fused left-field beats and otherworldly synth textures with sugary neo-soul vocals; she sometimes referred to her style as "raw&b." She gradually embraced higher BPMs, bringing her sound closer to various forms of forward-thinking club music, and four Zonez mixtapes appeared between 2016 and 2019, splicing juke, jungle, Miami bass, and many other styles. While the Zonez releases feature less of Suzis own vocals than some of her other releases, they showcase her fearless production skills and match the spontaneous energy of her live shows. Warp sublabel Disciples condensed the mixtapes into the 2022 compilation Infinite Zonez, Suzi Analogues first vinyl release in a decade, following earlier collaborations with Georgia Anne Muldrow and TOKiMONSTA. The release gathers a handful of tracks from each of the four Zonez mixtapes, starting with material from the fourth volume and working backwards to the first. Second track "BEST 16" is a prime example of Suzis versatility, starting by twirling samples in reverse and following a calmly paced hip-hop beat until it flips to rocket-speed drumnbass. Tracks with Junglepussy and Michael Millions dice the rappers vocals over jittery breaks and starry melodies, constantly keeping the elements in motion. NappyNappa provides a more straightforward verse on "Shine NN Any Weather," in contrast with the mega-bizarre, voice scrambler-assisted abstractions of his work as half of the duo Model Home. Co-productions with RP Boo and DJ Taye (and DJ Earl, not included on this release) strengthen Suzis ties to the Chicago footwork scene, while "Dont Clock NN" evokes atmospheric jungle at its most hip-hop-flavored. The set concludes with the truly gleeful "NrgNrg," a caffeinated soft drink in song form. Several other fine tracks from the Zonez series didnt make the cut, from the downtempo melancholia of "I Get Itt" to the glitchy electro-punk rager "LOUDR," but Infinite Zonez works as a collection of adventurous, boundary-pushing club music, and a worthy introduction to the brilliant producers world. ~ Paul Simpson
