想像上の声に応える現代のレスポンソリウム

ハイナー・ゲッベルスの作品『A House of Call-My Imaginary Notebook』は、4部からなる連作です。ここではゲッベルスが"想像上のノート"にためていた声に、アンサンブル・モデルンが応えています。これらの声はゲッベルスがプロジェクトや旅、個人的な会合の中で、そして古文書(その中のいくつかは全くの偶然に)で出会ったもので、ここではそれら本来の音と言語として、対話、嘆願、祈り、懇願、命令、話あるいは歌として再現されています。楽団員たちは個々にあるいは集団で、批評し、遮り、支え、否定する"レスポンソリウム(応唱)"のようにそれらの声に応えています。CD2枚組。
タイトルはアイルランドのジェイムズ・ジョイスの小説『フィネガンズ・ウェイク』の一節「A prolonged visit to a house of call」から採られ、アメリカの作曲家ジョン・ケージはこの小説に基づくラジオ劇『ロアラトリオ』を書いています。ゲッペルスはこのラジオ劇にも深い感銘を受けたと語っています。
ハイナー・ゲッベルスは1952年生まれ。フランクフルトを拠点に活動する作曲家・演出家です。アンサンブル・モデルンは現代音楽の最前線に立つドイツの室内合奏団です。

The catalog of the ECM label is a bit less oriented toward High Modernism than it used to be, but there is still plenty of it present. Witness this uncompromising work from composer Heiner Goebbels, filling two CDs in four sections, each of which has three or four subsections. The title comes from Joyces Finnegans Wake. One of the section titles, "Grain de la Voix" ("Grain of the Voice"), refers to Roland Barthes classic essay on music and its appeal, but all the sections pertain to the voice. The work is a kind of orchestral setting of recordings of voices that, the composer indicates, "have moved me, disturbed me, thrilled me, alienated me, and most of which, in this project, could be heard for the first time on the concert stage." Some of the voices are quite recent, while others date back as far as 1906, and they are varied, including poetry, speeches, and various types of religious utterances. Their relationship to the orchestra shifts; to quote Goebbels again, the orchestra "is confronted with voices: it presents, supports, accompanies, answers or contradicts them." Goebbels orchestra is large, enabling an absorbing variety of orchestral commentaries that are clearly rendered by the contemporary music specialist Ensemble Modern Orchestra, and his idea seems to be entirely original. This will be enough for some, too much for others, but as usual, ECMs execution is sterling. ~ James Manheim
