Synthesizer Classics: A Homage to the Biggest Synthesizer Hits of the '80s features covers by current electronic groups like Aquatic Ghost, Rey, and the Hidden of originals by Space, Giorgio Moroder, and other synth pioneers. Supersonic's take on Moroder's "The Apartment" from the American Gigolo soundtrack is tense, percussive, and complex, while Joseph's version of Didier Marouani's "Final Signal" blends appealingly brassy and crystalline synth textures. Aquatic Ghost's cover of Space's "Tango in Space" also captures the mix of disco chic and robotic funk that made these songs vibrant in the first place. For the most part, though, this collection focuses too much on slavish reproduction, losing sight of the entertaining, slightly cheesy futurism that the original works still retain. ~ Heather Phares
