The Dance

米ブルックリンをベースに活動するシンガーソングライター、ニコール・シュナイトのプロジェクト、エア・ウェイヴス。キャス・マックームスやフランキー・コスモスがゲスト参加したニュー・アルバム『ザ・ダンス』、リリース。

Air Wavesのアルバム『The Dance』は、フックと忘れられないメロディーに溢れ、深くダンサブルなグルーヴの上を滑り、Air Waves生来の思いやり、簡潔さ、不思議なポップセンスが随所で光る。美しくシンプルで、即座にアクセスでき、完全に中毒性のある傑作で、Cass Mccombs、Skyler Skjelset(Fleet Foxes、Beach House)、Luke Temple、Brian Betancourt(Hospitality, Sam Evian)、Rina Mushonga、Frankie Cosmos、Lispector、David Christian、Ethan Sass、Ben Florencio等がゲスト参加している。Nicole Schneitは2009年に、Guided By Voicesの曲にインスパイアされたAir Waves名義でアルバムをリリース。2010年の『Dungeon Dots』(Sharon Van Ettenがゲスト参加)、2015年の『Parting Glances』、2017年の『Warrior』といったアルバムは、和やかだが驚愕的なポップというSchneitのヴィジョンを鮮明にするものであった。『The Dance』は、その軌跡を引き継いでいるが、俳句のような直接的さと提案で具体から普遍へと叙情の視線を保っている。

The longtime project of Brooklyn singer/songwriter Nicole Schneit, Air Waves has always found common ground where loose D.I.Y. indie rock meets innate pop smarts. On albums like 2015s Parting Glances and 2018s thematically combative Warrior, a rugged underpinning of Schneits lo-fi origins persists beneath their winsome, sighing melodies. Comforting is a term thats often been applied to Air Waves music, and even at their most abstract or politically conscious, the word still somehow applies. Three years in the making and loaded with interesting guests, The Dance is perhaps Schneits most diverse set to date, with songs that range in style from scruffy guitar rock to quirky synth pop and folky minimalism. It is also one of their most enjoyable. Air Waves knack for sweet melodies is still at the heart of their music, turning even their most oblique material (the dirge-like "Black Metal Demon") into something warm and dreamy. Other highlights like "The Roof" and title track play on Schneits endearing, sometimes conversational vocal style, though its the bouncing avant-pop of "Wait" that pushes Air Waves envelope the furthest. Over an insistent electro pulse and snaky saxophone lines, Schneit delivers an experimental pop gem whose abstract incantations about cowboys and demon lovers feel more joyous than off-putting. Guests like Luke Temple, Cass McCombs, Rina Mushonga, and Frankie Cosmos are as a whole complementary rather than distracting, and their contributions simply add additional color and depth to Schneits already sturdy songs. ~ Timothy Monger

NYのブルックリンベースのSSW=Nicole Schneitによるソロプロジェクト、Air Wavesが最新作をリリース。豪華な客演も話題となった今作では、素朴で風通しの良いインディーフォークの中にポップセンスの光る 《The Roof》がオススメ。またCass McCombosとのコラボ曲 《Alien》では伸びやかで優しい音色を奏でている。制作に約3年の年月を費やしたと語っており、多くのコラボレーターと連携して意匠を凝らしたこだわりも強く感じる。創作意欲の高まった彼女の音楽に対するアテチュードを体感できる完成度の高いアルバムとなっている。
