ベートーヴェン: 交響曲全集

作曲家の生誕250周年記念として行われた、刺激的な新たな交響曲全曲録音。

元々2020年4月にベートーヴェンの生誕250周年記念として企画された、ヤニック・ネゼ=セガンとヨーロッパ室内管弦楽団とのベートーヴェンの交響曲全集です。
2014年のシューマン、2017年のメンデルスゾーンのそれぞれの交響曲全集に続き3度目の共演となります。CD5枚組。
この全集の演奏は新たなmusical textによるもので、特に第9番ではベートーヴェンのオリジナル譜と最近再発見されたコントラファゴットのパート譜が初めて使用され、はっきりと違いを感じ取ることができるでしょう。

The world may not be clamoring for a new set of Beethoven symphonies, but Yannick Nezet-Seguin is an exciting conductor, and this one has fresh ideas in many places. The set was recorded live in 2021 at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. One novelty is that this is the first performance to use the New Beethoven Edition versions recently published in Germany. Notes by the editor, Beate Angelika Kraus, contain the intriguing observation that the finale of the Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 ("Choral"), was apparently sung in Italian at the premiere. The differences from the usual versions are most apparent in the Ninth Symphony, where the text underlay is changed, and there is a new contrabassoon part. Beyond this, Nezet-Seguins readings are frequently distinctive, if not uniformly successful. In general, his interpretations show, like so many others these days, the influence of the historical performance movement. His tempos are generally quick (sample the first movement of the Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21); his strings avoid vibrato; his attitude is matter-of-fact, with a low dynamic range that at times verges on imperceptibility. Dramatic gestures like the fermatas in the first movement of the Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, are pruned way back, and this does not necessarily make sense when things come to the finale, and heroic is the only way to go. Nezet-Seguin tends to do better in the even-numbered symphonies, where there is less tension with Beethovens heroic ideal. The high point is perhaps the Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 ("Pastoral"), which is relaxed and brings out the vivid wind details that this conductor does well. In the Ninth Symphony, the 60-member Chamber Orchestra of Europe feels a bit underpowered, but Nezet-Seguin has an agile group of soloists who can cope with Beethovens thorny vocal writing. Nezet-Seguin is amassing a strong body of fans, and they have flocked to this set, which showed strong commercial potential in the summer of 2022. ~ James Manheim
