ロック・シーンにおける孤高のレジェンド、ニール・ヤング。今もなお現代に伝えたい言葉をまとめあげた新作の発表にとどまらず、ロック史に燦然と輝く彼のカタログ作品や貴重なライヴ音源、未発表音源などを紐解いていくアーカイヴ・シリーズをリリースし続け、休むことなく歌と言葉を世界に発信し続ける、まさに「生ける伝説」の名に相応しい存在だ。

先日オフィシャル・ブートレグ・シリーズ（通称OBS）の3作品をリリースしたばかりの彼から、また新たな”音楽の秘宝”が届けられた。それが、今や神話的な存在としてファンの間で語られてきた作品であり、ミレニアム／世紀が変わるタイミングで盟友クレイジー・ホースとともにサンフランシスコにあるToast Studiosでレコーディングされていた、2001年のスタジオ・アルバム『TOAST』だ。ニール・ヤングとクレイジー・ホースが、荒々しく轟くようなその頂点を極める素晴らしい作品が、遂に今公式音源として世界に届けられることとなるのだ。

この20年間、この『TOAST』の存在はコレクターの間でひそやかに囁かれてきた。3曲の未発表曲を収録したこのアルバムについて、ニール・ヤングは様々な機会に情報の断片をファンに伝えてきたのだ。そして昨年、彼自身のヴァーチャル・ニュースペーパー、”The Times Contrarian”で、ニール・ヤングはこのアルバムについて詳しく述べたことで、ファンの間でその作品に対する期待感が募っていったのは言うまでもないだろう。

その名の通り、この『TOAST』は重く、苦しく、そして電撃的なまでの緊張感に満ちあふれている。スイートなサウンドを聴かせるオープニング・トラック「Quit」でも、”Don't Say You Love Me"という歌詞が何度も繰り返されており、続く「Standing In The Light of Love」と「Goin' Home」では、オーヴァードライブするギターが支配するフィールド上で馬をつないでいた縄を解き放つかのようなサウンドが展開している。また、「Timberline」では、危険極まるサウンドに乗せて失業中の樵が自身の信念と格闘する物語を歌い、まるで催眠術のように響き渡る10分もの楽曲「Gateway of Love」で痛みの少ない未来を夢見た後、くすんだ魅力に満ちた「How Ya Doin'?」へと続いていく。そしてこのアルバム全体をようやくするかのような、陰に満ちたフィナーレとも言うべき「Boom Boom Boom」で”All I got is a broken heart, and I don't try to hide it when I play my guitar （俺が手にしたのは傷ついた心だけ、でもギターを弾くときにはそれを隠そうとは思わない）”と歌っている。

ニール・ヤング・アーカイヴ（NYA）は、まさに広大なレポジトリ＝貯蔵庫だ。半世紀以上にわたり、これほど広大なサウンドとスタイルを探求してきたアーティストは、おそらく他にはいないだろう。この『TOAST』の待望の公式リリースは、その貯蔵庫がまさに生命力溢れるニール・ヤングの音楽の宝庫であることを見事に証明しているのだ。(2/2)

The year before Neil Young tracked 2002s meandering and sometimes draggy Are You Passionate?, he recorded some of the songs with his longtime backing band Crazy Horse, trying on the fit of the semi-soulful material with them before ultimately choosing to re-record with groove masters Booker T. & the M.G.s. Seven-song album Toast consists of the long-shelved Crazy Horse sessions from 2001 and includes versions of four songs that materialized in different forms on Are You Passionate? as well as three previously unreleased outtakes. Despite their reputation as one of rock & rolls loosest, scrappiest institutions, Crazy Horses playing is surprisingly refined on Toast, with their takes on some of the Are You Passionate? tunes being hard to differentiate from the ever-smooth Booker T. versions. "How Ya Doin?" (aka "Mr. Disappointment") is superior on Toast, with the tempo slowed just a little bit and Young approaching the vocals with his familiar achy near-falsetto rather than the experimental grumble he sang with on the AYP? version. Crazy Horse fits right into the mellow groove of "Quit," and "Goin Home" (a rocking tune that sounds more like a Ragged Glory leftover than a soul exercise) was the only song on AYP? played by Young and Crazy Horse, so the Toast version sounds nearly identical. The songs that didnt end up on AYP? are similar in tone to "Goin Home," with "Standing in the Light of Love" built on snarly riffs and pensive playing and "Timberline" stomping along in a similar fashion. The remaining tracks find Young and his band stretching out in lingering jams. "Gateway of Love" ambles on for more than ten minutes, like a more tropical "Like a Hurricane," and "Boom Boom Boom" (presented as closing track "Shes a Healer" on AYP?) expands on the whispery blues of the album version with extra instrumental passages, including a lengthy trumpet solo. Its a lot less slick than the AYP? rendition, recalling more of a bleary Tonights the Night energy than the pitch-perfect session-musician feel of the album version. Whether you prefer the slightly more organic vibe of Toast or the cleaned-up Are You Passionate? will depend on your personal relationship with Youngs massive catalog. For fans of his early moody rock or the rough-edged brilliance he always locked into with Crazy Horse, Toast will be a clear favorite more than just an interesting companion piece. ~ Fred Thomas
