The duo Swing Out Sister burst onto the U.K.s pop scene in 1985 with "Breakout," their second single, which promptly registered near the top of the U.K. charts. Its Better to Travel, their debut long-player, topped the U.K. album charts in 1987. It established a pattern for their chart success through the early 90s, as evidenced by a large number of singles, 1989s Kaleidoscope World (with arrangements by Jimmy Webb) and 1992s Get in Touch with Yourself (which included a remix collaboration with Frankie Knuckles on "Notgonnachange"). These recordings -- all produced by Paul Staveley ODuffy -- were appended by a widely acclaimed live show that established Swing Out Sister as influential. Themselves influenced by vintage jazz from the Blue Note, Pacific Jazz, and Verve catalogs, Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick, 60s film scores, blue-eyed soul, and dance music, the duo were championed by Gilles Peterson, John Peel, Paul Murphy, and Colin Curtis, establishing their global reputation. Blue Mood, Breakout and Beyond is a deluxe box set from Cherry Reds Cherry Pop imprint. Assembled with full participation from vocalist/lyricist Corinne Drewery and composer/multi-instrumentalist Andy Connell, the release compiles the aforementioned trilogy of albums with 1993s Japan-only Live at the Jazz Cafe. It also includes an additional four discs full of rare versions, singles, mixes, and B-sides. Swing Out Sisters first three studio albums are presented on a disc each just as they originally were released. Disc four contains the entirety of Live at the Jazz Cafe, recorded in December 1992 and released in Japan in 1993. While fans will likely have the first three recordings, they do set an important context for virtually everything that follows. Disc five offers rare, alternate versions and mixes of tracks from Its Better to Travel. It includes a dub version of "Blue Mood" and another mix, as well as the "Horny Version" of "Breakout" (with loads of overdubbed horns), in addition to other mixes including an instrumental issued only in America. There are multiple mixes of the singles "Twilight World" and "Fooled by a Smile," and an instrumental version of "Communion." Discs six and seven are jammed with single versions and remixes from all three albums. Highlights include the classical mix of "Twilight World," the orchestral mix of "Precious Words," and an extended version of "You on My Mind." Disc eight is composed entirely of B-sides and 7" edits, some well-known such as "Coney Island Man" and "Surrender," some collectible as in "Windmills of Your Mind" and "Wake Me When Its Over," and some just plain rare including the live version of "Circulate" that closes the set. In addition, this handsomely assembled box includes track-by-track annotation, interviews by Paul Sinclair with the duo and Duffy, loads of photos, and rare illustrations by Drewery. For fans, this is essential; for students of the era and general listeners, this music is an iconic example of sophisti-pop at its best. ~ Thom Jurek
