イルミネーションが贈る『ミニオンズ』シリーズ最新作『ミニオンズ フィーバー』(原題:Minions: The Rise of Gru)のオリジナル・サウンドトラック。
『ミニオンズ フィーバー』は1970年代が舞台。世界一の超悪玉であるグルーが、映画界で最も卑劣な仲間であるミニオンたちと出会い、史上最強の悪党集団に立ち向かう、彼らのはじまりの物語が描かれている。

2022年グラミー賞最優秀プロデューサー、ジャック・アントノフがプロデュースした当サウンドトラック盤は、ファンク、ディスコ、ソウルの名曲の数々を、現在最も注目されている才能あるアーティストによる1970年代の大ヒット曲の新バージョンでよみがえらせる内容となっている。リップス・インクの1979年のヒット曲「ファンキータウン」をセイント・ヴィンセントが新たにアレンジし、スライ&ザ・ファミリー・ストーンの1967年の大ヒット曲「ダンス・トゥ・ザ・ミュージック」をH.E.R.がカバー。また、ジョン・レノンの1970年の曲「インスタント・カーマ」のブリーチャーズ・バージョンやカーペンターズの1972年のシングル「愛にさよならを」のフィービー・ブリッジャーズのエモーショナルな解釈など、どの曲もそれぞれのアーティストによって新たな魅力が引き出されている。もちろん、ミニオンズ自身もこのアルバムに参加しており、サイモン&ガーファンクルの1970年代の代表曲「いとしのセシリア」を独特のパフォーマンスで披露している。

The soundtrack to the 2022 animated movie Minions: The Rise of Gru picks up on the vintage pop vibe of the first Minions film, moving from that original films 60s milieu to the 70s setting of the sequel. However, where the first Minions movie featured original recordings by 60s acts like the Kinks and Donovan, Rise of Gru features classic 70s hits redone by contemporary artists. Its a fun concept that makes for some surprising, and surprisingly good, cover tunes, including Thundercats groove-oriented reworking of Steve Millers "Fly Like an Eagle," St. Vincents new wave-inspired take on Lipps Incs "Funkytown," and Phoebe Bridgers poignantly earnest version of the Carpenters AM pop ballad "Goodbye to Love." Particularly compelling and highly unexpected is Jackson Wangs fervent reading of Patrick Hernandezs 1979 disco novelty "Born to Be Alive." There are also the titular little yellow creatures singing, represented here by a buoyant take on Simon & Garfunkels "Cecilia." Theres also at least one original in Diana Ross and Tame Impalas funky disco-soul anthem "Turn Up the Sunshine." As with the first Minions soundtrack (and the Despicable Me soundtracks before them), the soundtrack to Minions: The Rise of Gru proves as much of a fun draw as the film itself. ~ Matt Collar
