レイフ・ヴォーン・ウィリアムズの知られざる作品、埋もれていた作品、未発表作品などを取り上げてきた、ヴォーン・ウィリアムズ協会の自主レーベル「アルビオン・レコーズ(AlbionRecords)」が贈る、ヴォーン・ウィリアムズ生誕150周年記念アルバム。
ヴォーン・ウィリアムズ慈善信託とレイフ・ヴォーン・ウィリアムズ協会の多くのメンバーの寛大なサポートによって実現したこの野心的なプロジェクト。アルバムのメインとなる仮面劇《パンの記念日(Pan's Anniversary)》は、17世紀イギリスの劇作家・詩人のベン・ジョンソンのテキストに、ヴォーン・ウィリアムズが作曲した附随音楽(いくつかの舞曲の編曲は友人のホルストが行っている)が取り上げられた作品で、1905年のシェイクスピアの誕生日祝賀会で一度だけ演奏され、この録音のために再構築されました。本アルバムでは、英国ロイヤル・フィルハーモニック協会のヤング・アーティスト賞や英国批評家サークル賞、2019年には栄誉あるMBE(大英帝国五等勲爵士)を受勲するなど、輝かしい活躍を見せるイギリスの名ソプラノ、メアリー・べヴァンを筆頭に、実力派のソリスト陣を迎え、合唱団、オーケストラが織り成す4つの美しい讃美歌が音楽の中心に描かれています。
《トマス・タリスの主題による幻想曲》は、本来は3群に分けられた弦楽合奏の編成ですが、本アルバムでは弦楽八重奏に合唱団を加えた編成にアレンジ。合唱のテキストには、パーカー大司教の詩篇65篇の英訳が用いられています。弦楽器の緻密なアンサンブルと、まるでパイプオルガンを思い起こさせる合唱の荘厳な響きでアルバムを締めくくります。
