Overmono have become an unmistakable presence in the club music world since their emergence during the mid-2010s -- catching one of their hit-filled live sets at a festival only underlines this fact. "So U Kno," the B-side to one of their three 2021 singles, became one of their biggest club anthems to date, earning track of the year accolades from Resident Advisor. Cash Romantic, their third XL release to contain a dog on its cover, features another undeniable club smash, "Gunk," which continues the duos winning blend of choppy vocal hooks, taut beats, and trancey arpeggios. The rest of the EP sounds nothing like it, containing the types of stylistic explorations one might expect from a full album by the duo. The title track is tough, minimal drumnbass with spooky dub effects, and the much slower ambient techno track "Phosycon" is haunting in an entirely different way. "Gfortune" sounds like an already cloudy pop/R&B track heard through a late-night narcotic haze, hitting straight to the core due to its longing qualities rather than lyrics. "Bone Mics" samples the same vocalist as "Gunk" (Kindora), yet its wilder, bassier, and filled with much stranger sounds and effects. Cash Romantic demonstrates Overmonos range as well as the effectiveness of their craftiest club tracks. ~ Paul Simpson
