According to Andre Previn, this recording was basically a jam session on Gershwin, with little editing and a lot of spontaneous improvisation. That having been said, the recording sounds about as polished as the piano in Tanglewood's Ozawa Hall on which it was performed. The ballads, such as "Someone to Watch Over Me," have repose and intimacy, while "They All Laughed" has cross-accents and drive.
David Finck's double bass playing is solid and supportive; he seems to intuitively know when to throw in a lick and when to lay back. Previn's technique is meticulous, almost as though his imaginative approach originated in his fingers rather than his head. This recording is at its most successful when the two performers stay truer to Gershwin's original conception of tempo and character. Their "Fascinating Rhythm" has a lot of virtuosity, but is missing the crazy, unexpected accents of the Gershwin recording. However, this duo has a fantastic sound and sense of space in their playing, and their musical connectedness shows the depth of their friendship.
