"変えたいところは何もない。これまでに参加した中で、最もパワフルなコンサートのひとつだ"と生前にプリンス本人が語ったライヴ・パフォーマンスが、完全な形でついに発表されることが決定した。このコンサートは、1984年11月から85年4月にかけて全米各地を熱狂の渦に巻き込んだ「パープル・レイン・ツアー」の終盤、1985年3月30日、ニューヨーク州シラキュースのキャリア・ドームで収録された。約4万人のオーディエンスの熱狂的な歓声に迎えられ、プリンスがステージに登場するや、「Let's Go Crazy」や「1999」、「Little Red Corvette」などアップテンポのヒット曲をノンストップで次々に演奏。途中、「Do Me, Baby」などプリンスらしいエロティックなナンバーを交えながらコンサートは進み、最後は約20分間にわたる「Purple Rain」で大団円を迎える。バックを支えるバンド、ザ・レヴォリューションとの一糸乱れぬコンビネーションも相俟って、プリンスの全キャリアを通しても最も完璧なコンサートという評価を確立している。ザ・レヴォリューションのベーシスト、ブラウンマークは"シラキュースでのライヴを振り返ると、あれはどこからともなく現れ、どこまでも続く貨物列車のようだ。これまでたくさんのコンサートに参加しているが、あんなのは見たことがない"と語っている。日本での初来日公演が1986年だったことを考えると、多くの日本の音楽ファンにとってはまさしく"伝説"のコンサートと呼べるだろう。

Prince & the Revolution: Live marks the first official audio-only release of the concert the band gave at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York on March 30, 1985. The show has been heavily bootlegged over the years and released as a DVD on the 2017 Deluxe Edition of Purple Rain, so it hasnt been out of circulation, but the 2022 Legacy release is remastered and restored, both on the audio and visual level, its also available in spatial audio on streaming platforms. Whatever the medium, the performance captured on Prince & the Revolution: Live is phenomenal, a gig that captures a band at its peak who know theyre being filmed for posterity. The group is comfortable enough to stretch, vamp, and jam, and theyll even throw in such flair as jazzy accents on the chorus to "Delirious." Nevertheless, this performance isnt distinguished by detours, its defined by its precision. Prince decided to close the book on his Purple Rain era with this March 1985 concert, filming it for home video and broadcast in Europe. Knowing this represented a farewell to this phase, Prince pushed the Revolution to deliver a focused, kinetic set, one that featured every song on Purple Rain along with hits from 1999, accentuated by such B-sides as "Irresistible Bitch," "How Come U Dont Call Me Anymore," and "God," plus the non-LP frenzied funk workout "Possessed." The result is perhaps the best recorded document of Prince & the Revolution in full flight: they sound invincible here. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
