シャルロット・ソヒー作品集

シャルロット・ソヒーは1887年、エンジニアの父と、アマチュア音楽家の母のもとに生まれました。作曲の初歩を同じ女性作曲家メル・ボニ(1858-1937)に学びました。1894年にパリのスコラ・カントルムに入学、そこではアルベール・ルーセルに対位法を、ルイ・ヴィエルヌ(1900年からノートルダム大聖堂の首席オルガニストを務めた)にオルガンを師事。1908年、シャルロットはスコラ・カントルムで、12歳年上の作曲家で指揮者のマルセル・ラベイと出会い、結婚します。マルセルはその後スコラ・カントルムの教授に就任、子供も生まれ、幸せな時期を過ごします。サロンにも出入りし、パトロンからも認められる存在でした。戦禍を乗り越えた家族はノルマンディーに移り住み、シャトーを手に入れ、そこには7台以上のピアノを置き、エネスクやオネゲルを含め様々な音楽家たちを招いたりもし、さらにはモーリス・ドニといった音楽以外の芸術家たちとも交流があったそうです。夫マルセルは小さな村に音楽学校も開設しました。シャルロットは子供たちのために室内楽曲を作曲し、セルマ・ラーゲルレフの短編小説『アストリッド』をもとに自ら台本を書いたオペラ『王冠をかぶった奴隷』にも取り組みます。4回上演され、うち2回は夫のマルセルが指揮しました。1955年に脳出血で急逝しますが、このディスクにも収録されているピアノ作品、室内楽、また管弦楽のための規模の大きな作品も残しています。

The rediscovery of female composers proceeded more slowly in France than in Britain or the U.S., but that seems to be changing with the establishment of the La Boite a Pepites label; it will devote itself to multivolume excavations of music by women. Charlotte Sohy: Compositrice de la Belle Epoque is the labels debut release, covering the works of a composer who was all but unknown until just a few years before the album appeared in 2022. It is well worth the effort of all involved, and it is notable that the three-volume set appeared on classical best-seller charts in the autumn of 2022. One volume is devoted to keyboard music, one to chamber music -- including works with voice -- and one to orchestral music, again including orchestral songs. Theres much to explore here, but a preliminary impression would be that Sohys instrumental music is more distinctive than her vocal music, although there are some talented vocal soloists here; sample the work of the fabulously named Aude Extremo in the Deux poemes chantes, Op. 17. In Sohys music there are traces of her teacher, Vincent dIndy, of Ernest Chausson, of Gabriel Faure in the earlier works, but in the best of them, there is an economical wit that is entirely distinctive. Try the Deuxieme Quatuor, Op. 33 ("String Quartet No. 2"), which, after a very nervous "Badinierie scherzo," concludes with an entirely unexpected and quite weighty fugue. There is not a work in the set that couldnt hold its own on a program of French music, and the various performers are enthusiastic in their contributions. Those interested are urged to seek out the physical release, which includes detailed information on each work as well as some interesting cartoon illustrations. This is a pathbreaking release, likely to be followed by many more on its label. ~ James Manheim
