復活節の晩祷

1670年代に創設され、世界でも有数のカレッジ聖歌隊として活動を続けるケンブリッジ・セント・ジョンズ・カレッジ合唱団(聖歌隊)と、2007年の音楽監督就任後、数多くの名演を共に創り上げてきた名指揮者アンドルー・ネスシンガ。Signum Classics移籍後にも精力的なリリースを続け、これまでにBBCミュージック・マガジン賞の「合唱部門賞」(SIGCD456)、BBCミュージック・マガジンの「Choral & Song Choice」(SIGCD541)、英グラモフォン誌の「Editor's Choice」(SIGCD456、SIGCD567、SIGCD588、SIGCD667)に選ばれると、「マイケル・フィニシー:パイアス・アンセムズ&ヴォランタリーズ」(SIGCD624)ではこれら2つの賞に加え、2021年の英グラモフォン賞現代音楽部門にノミネートされるなど、英メディアでの極めて高い評価を維持しています。
今回の新しい録音は、2020年に発売した「Ash Wednesday」(SIGCD605)に続くライヴ・アルバムとなります。「Ash Wednesday」では、イースター(復活祭)に先立つ四旬節の最初の一日「灰の水曜日」に行われる特別な典礼を収録していましたが、今作にはその後四旬節が明け、イースターの季節からの作品が集められています。

This Easter release is the second live recording of an Evensong service from St. Johns College, Cambridge, by the colleges celebrated choir under director Andrew Nethsingha. The chief difference between the two is that this service contained an organ, concluding with the blazing finale of the Symphony No. 6 for organ by Charles-Marie Widor, whereas the earlier release is a cappella. However, it is also notable that this album nicely exemplifies the aims of Nethsingha and the choir, which point in the direction of the contemporary. Of course, this is English collegiate choral music, so there is going to be an encrustation of tradition, but consider the striking cover image in the graphics, not from St. Johns at all but from a church in Dallas, Texas. Note the bright sound of the young singers and the recent translations of biblical texts, which will either irritate the listener or bring those texts a new immediacy. Most of all, consider the program, which contains only one Renaissance work, which is by John Taverner. True, there is also only one contemporary work, the opening My Beloved Spake, by Julian Anderson, but the music skews toward the 20th century and generally reflects a direct engagement with the texts. Sample the Preces and Responses of Kenneth Leighton, which seem to flow directly from the spoken Scripture readings and from the sequence of 19th century psalm settings near the beginning. Beautifully recorded, this is a fresh take on the Evensong service.
