There are many fewer Easter albums than there are Christmas albums, which is a bit suspect theologically, but this one hit classical best-seller charts during the Easter season in 2022. Hearing it should be worthwhile in subsequent Easter seasons as well, and the album also serves as a good introduction to what the Choir of Kings College, Cambridge does best. The program depicts the course of the week from Palm Sunday to Easter. It is encrusted with tradition, from the Renaissance to a few latecomers like Bob Chilcott inducted into the canon, and the singers offer a well-honed version of the classic all-male English collegiate choir, but there is nothing stale here. The choir picks fresh examples of music by the composers performed, thinks them through, and delivers beautifully honed, persuasive performances. Consider Antonio Lotti, present in countless programs of traditional choral music. He is represented not by the ubiquitous Miserere but the passionately lyrical Crucifixus a 6, to which the choir and director Daniel Hyde give the proper expressivity. Chilcott sets the traditional text that gives the album its title, hinting at old carols but creating something purely modern. So it goes throughout; hoary names like John Stainer sound fresh when they are done right, which is what happens here, without a doubt.
