キングズ・シンガーズの元メンバーであるナイジェル・ショートによって2001年に設立され、世界最高峰のヴォーカル・アンサンブルの一つとして広く活動する"テネブレ"。2016年に「ブラームス&ブルックナー(SIGCD430)」が2度目のBBCミュージック・マガジン賞を受賞し、2018年には「天体の音楽(SIGCD 904)」がグラミー賞にノミネートされ、大きな注目を浴びました。
クリスチャン・フォーショウは、マイケル・ナイマンによる映画音楽の制作チームに参加したり、ブライアン・イーノなどと共演し現代的な音楽の分野で活動する一方で、ヴォーチェス8などの古典と現代を融合させた合唱アンサンブルとクロスオーヴァーの分野でも活躍しています。今回のテネブレとの共演でもギボンズやヒルデガルト・フォン・ビンゲンなどの古楽の作曲家から、フォーショウ自作を含む現代作曲家の作品まで取り上げています。古楽の作品は、フォーショウの高い音楽性から生み出される演奏や編曲によって新たな一面をみせており、テネブレの美しい歌声が加わることにより聴くものに深い感動を与えてくれます。

The title of this release by saxophonist Christian Forshaw and the choir Tenebrae, under the direction of Nigel Short, makes it sound like a crossover effort aimed at aiding sleep. It might serve that purpose, but it is considerably more rigorous and original than the title might suggest. Forshaw composes music that could be termed minimalist, designed to showcase his instruments glassy tone. He has released various albums under his own name, but he is especially effective in collaborations like this one. When Sleep Comes offers three types of compositions: there are arrangements of choral polyphony (or chant) with a saxophone part introduced; these derive much of their appeal from the fact that Forshaw can hone his saxophones sound to resemble the pristine lines from Tenebrae. There are original compositions for saxophone and voices by Forshaw, and there are tracks from the choir alone, without Forshaw, who gets credit for writing music that doesnt stick out in this context. To enjoy this, one has to have some sympathy for music that takes the likes of Thomas Tallis and Antoine Brumel merely as a stimulus to further creative activity. For those okay with the idea, this is one of its best executions. Sure, one can put it on in a car stereo to take the edge off the commute home, but there is more to it once one really starts to listen. Signum Classics sound is superb.
