After the release of 2007s Alright!, Bogdan Raczynskis final release for Aphex Twins now-defunct Rephlex label, the enigmatic producer seemed to disappear for a while, only surfacing for the occasional remix or live gig. Hes remained busy behind the scenes, however, collaborating with several synthesizer companies and developing sounds for sample packs and modules. Following two releases of early material (Rave Til You Cry and the Debt EP) and an EP created on a self-designed hardware tracker (BANANS), ADDLE is Raczynskis first proper album in 15 years, and a major departure from the whimsical headrush jungle of his best-known releases. The closest relative in his catalog would be myloveilove, a 2001 full-length which seemed gentler and more sincere than previous efforts, but still had a fair amount of chaotic, amateurish moments. His untrained vocals resurface on some of ADDLEs tracks, but not the wheezing accordion, and hes clearly become far more focused in his synth explorations. Several tracks contain beat sequences which seem sporadic, but are also much more carefully constructed than the hypercharged breakbeats of his drillnbass records. The last two tracks seem to settle into more deceptively straightforward kick drum patterns, yet theyre more complex than they appear. This is some of the eeriest, most alien music Raczynski has ever made, and while it lacks the playfulness his fans are used to, by no means is it unadventurous or devoid of life. It requires patience, but its singularity makes it worthwhile. ~ Paul Simpson
