「モーツァルトが知っていたファゴット」を追求し続ける名手による画期的協奏曲録音

ヨーロッパ各地の一流古楽器オーケストラのメンバーでありながら、ソリストとしても注目すべき活躍を続ける一流管楽器プレイヤーが集うアンサンブル・マルシュアス。その創設メンバーの一人で芸術監督でもあるピーター・ウィランは、近年モーツァルトがファゴットのために作曲した音楽とじっくり向き合い、数年おきに瑞々しい新録音をリリースし続けてきました。今回はアンサンブルに弦楽器も加え、ついにモーツァルトの傑作協奏曲を録音。ザルツブルクの楽器注文歴や同時代の史料に見る証言などから多角的な検証を経て、作曲家が知っていたであろうドレスデンのグレンザー・モデルを再現した楽器で味わい豊かな解釈を伝えます。さらに既存の録音盤から、管楽合奏にしては珍しい短調によるセレナードK. 388と、チェロで演奏されることの多い低音部を通奏低音のように鍵盤(フォルテピアノ)で解釈した珍しい二重奏ソナタK. 292も収録。モーツァルトがファゴットという楽器を通じてどんな音を紡いだか、多角的に聴き深められる構成になっているのも嬉しいポイントと言えるでしょう。

Recordings of Mozarts wind music on historically appropriate instruments are not abundant, and commercial success has greeted this release by bassoonist Peter Whelan and his group Ensemble Marsyas. The best is saved for last, in the form of the Serenade for winds in C minor, K. 388. This is not a solo bassoon work; the bassoon has a few prominent numbers, but it is a work for wind ensemble. No matter, though, as the contrasts brought out by the period winds (it would have been nice to have some indication of exactly what instruments were being played) generate an extraordinary performance. The second movement, beginning with instruments in the higher ranges, brings a sense of real relief from the dark first movement, only to be displaced by the rhythmically spiky minuet. The variation-set finale showcases all of the considerable color of Mozarts writing here. The Serenade, which was recorded in 2019, is worth the price of admission by itself, but the curtain-raisers from sessions in 2014 (the Bassoon Sonata in B flat major, K. 292) and 2021 (the Bassoon Concerto in B flat major, K. 191), are also both enjoyable. These are minor Mozart pieces, but the K. 292 sonata is rarely played (it may have started life as a bassoon-cello duet), and the concerto presents some difficulties to the soloist. Whelan solves these nicely, and the mastering work by producer Philip Hobbs is solid. Working in three different churches and halls, he avoids the key-clacking that is the bane of bassoon recordings. Well worth the time of anyone who likes the bassoon or the astonishing K. 388 serenade, one of the bleakest things Mozart ever wrote.
