シリーズ第10弾では、初期、中期、後期のピアノ・ソナタに加えて、《アリエッタと12の変奏》が選ばれています。非常に初期の作品である3番、4番と、それらとは印象が対照的な中期の作品である28番と45番、そして後期に作られ比較的規模が大きく、ハイドンが作曲したピアノ・ソナタの中でも芸術性の高い作品のひとつである60番が収録されています。ジャン=エフラム・バヴゼが持ち前の知的な解釈で洗練されたハイドンの世界を描き出します。

The Haydn keyboard sonata series of pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has been one of the great joys of the 21st century, for Haydn fits this artists playful personality to a T. He can be said to have elevated the sonatas, previously thought to make up a minor part of Haydns output, to a new plane. All of the virtues that have made Bavouzets series great are present here. He makes a strong case for playing the early sonatas (there are two here from before 1760) on a piano even though they were undoubtedly intended for a harpsichord, finding the wit and economy of the mature Haydn in them in incipient forms. Most of the volumes have included one of Haydns late sonatas, whose influence on Beethoven has not yet been fully appreciated. Here, Bavouzets reading of the Piano Sonata No. 60 in C major, Hob. 16/50, captures the works total originality. There is an odds-and-ends quality to this program. The two early sonatas are rather slight, perhaps not by Haydn at all, and the piece designated as the Piano Sonata No. 28 in D major, Hob. 14/5, is an unfinished work that does, one must admit, boast an impressively convincing completion by Christa Landon (wife of the famed Haydn scholar H.C. Robbins Landon) and Karl Heinz Fussl. The rarely played Arietta con 12 Variazioni, Hob. 17/3, receives an experimental interpretation in which Bavouzet varies the tempo to an unusual degree. Whatever questions there may be, however, those following Bavouzets series will find much of interest here.
