名門カーネギー・メロン・ウィンド・アンサンブル
リヒャルト・シュトラウスの若き日と晩年の管楽器のための2作品を収録

カーネギー・メロン・ウィンド・アンサンブルのルーツは、1908年に設立された、カーネギー・メロン大学のキルティ・バンドです。マーチングバンド、コンサートバンドとして長い歴史を刻んできた名門です。現在では、オーケストラの管楽器セクションのように、パートを単独で演奏し、大編成の演奏スタイルでは出せない、シンフォニー・オーケストラのような繊細な音色を奏でることのできるバンドとして注目されています。
今回、指揮者として登場するのは、長年ピッツバーグ交響楽団の首席トランペット奏者を務めたジョージ・ヴォスバーグ。1992年よりカーネギー・メロン大学で教鞭をとり、2011年よりカーネギー・メロン・ウィンド・アンサンブルの音楽監督を務めています。

近年、カーネギー・メロン・ウィンド・アンサンブルは演奏される機会の少ない作品をレパートリーとして積極的に取り組んでいます。今回、リヒャルト・シュトラウスの初期と晩年に書かれた管楽器のための作品を録音しました。
「管楽器のためのセレナードOp.7」は、リヒャルト・シュトラウス若き日の作品。モーツァルトの傑作セレナーデ「グラン・パルティータ」と同じ13管楽器のために書かれたもので、初期ロマン派的な響きを聴くことができます。晩年シュトラウスはこの作品を、「音大生の立派な作品にすぎない」と批判的に語っていますが、後に豊かなテクスチャーと清澄な管楽器書法、作曲家の成熟した作品として世に出る管楽器のための交響曲「ザ・ハッピー・ワークショップ(楽しい仕事場)」は、まさにシュトラウスが学生時代に求めた理想の作品であるといえるでしょう。

シュトラウスは、ナチス政権と対立し、1935年にナチスの音楽局総裁を辞任。音楽的にもシェーンベルクやストラヴィンスキーのような鋭角的なモダニズムが主流の時代に、彼の作風はもはや時代にそぐわないという批判を浴びることになり苦しい時代を迎えます。戦火を逃れて疎開先で過ごしていたシュトラウスは1943年、約60年ぶりに管楽器のための作品を書きます。それは、「ザ・ハッピー・ワークショップ」と対になる「傷病兵の仕事場から」と題された管楽器のためのソナチネ。若書きのセレナーデOp.7よりも充実した書法と平穏で美しい旋律が印象的な作品。タイトルは、インフルエンザに罹患して療養していた自身を自虐的に表現したもの。
そして、ここに収録されている「ザ・ハッピー・ワークショップ」は、第二次世界大戦終戦の1945年に作曲。この作品は、16本の管楽器(フルート2、オーボエ2、クラリネット3、バセットホルン、バスクラリネット、ファゴット2、コントラファゴット、ホルン4)のために書かれており、若き日の理想モーツァルトの「グラン・パルティータ」のような豊かな響きを持ち、前作同様の巧みな書法を駆使し、自身の作品「英雄の生涯」の旋律など引用が見られるなど、リヒャルト・シュトラウスの軌跡を示すような穏やかで、音楽の喜びにあふれた作品となっています。

The Richard Strauss work here titled The Happy Workshop had various titles; on Strauss title page, it was the Sonatina No. 2 in E flat major, but it later appeared as the Symphony for Winds ("Die froliche Werkstatt," or "The Happy Workshop"). Its not clear where the ineffably charming subtitle came from; it would be odd for a publisher to have come up with it. It has been suggested that it was Strauss own and that he was referring to Friedrich Nietzsches Die froliche Wissenschaft ("The Joyful Science"). Whatever the case, weighing in at 40 minutes plus in length, it is no sonatina, and it is indeed joyous. Its finale has the spirit of transcendence found in Strauss very last works. This may seem mysterious in view of the fact that Strauss wrote it toward the end of World War II, in deep depression about the destruction of the Munich Court Theatre by Allied bombing, but there is perhaps no contradiction. It is an intricate work full of difficult writing for the winds, and part of the appeal of this work by the student Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble is that it lies at the very edge of their capabilities; director George Vosburgh has judged their capabilities well. One can certainly find cleaner readings, but few that so fully enter into the spirit of the work. Strauss dedicated the work "to the spirit of the divine Mozart at the end of a grateful life," and it does reflect a Mozartian strain that runs through Strauss entire output and that is also illustrated by the early Serenade, Op. 7, that Strauss wrote in the early 1880s. More than 60 years separate these two works, and the thread connecting them is another piece of charm. Strauss ultimately rejected both works, which contributed to their general neglect, but he was wrong, as composers so often are about their own works, and it is lovely to have them together on this single album.
