Recondites 2020 album Dwell was not atypical of the wintry, minimalist techno the Bavarian producer has long been known for, but it included a few downtempo cuts that edged close to trap. Taum seems even more trap-influenced, with a greater presence of slower tempos but less of the booming bass and biting snare drums usually heard in the genre, and none of the bombast of its festival-friendly EDM variant. Similar to how 2012s On Acid provided a very stripped-down, atmospheric take on acid house, Taum subtly incorporates trance-style synth arpeggios and acid synth lines into steady, precisely arranged tracks. The ominous, driving "Resilient" and the thumping, slightly paranoid "Sweet Pain" are some of the most club-ready productions Recondite has released in a while. Even still, the predominance of tracks like the aptly titled "Scare" and the darkwave synth pop instrumental "Elation" mark a definite shift in Recondites direction with Taum. ~ Paul Simpson
