全世界トータル・セールス1,400万枚、楽曲総ストリーミング回数約70億を誇り、デビュー・シングル「ティック・トック」が全米シングル・チャート9週連続1位獲得の快挙を成し遂げスターダムに駆け上がった米女性シンガー・ソングライター=ケシャの通算4枚目となるアルバム『ハイ・ロード』。
本作には多彩なコラボレーターが参加しており、ジョン・ヒル、ダン・レイノルズ、スチュアート・クライトン、ドリュー・ピアソン、ブライアン・ウィルソン、スタージル・シンプソン、ネイト・ルイス、ジャスティン・トランサー、スティント、レイベル、ぺべ・セバートがアルバムに華を添えている。クリスティーナ・アギレラやトロイ・シヴァンなどのミュージック・ビデオを手掛けてきた映像作家=ルーク・ギルフォードが「Raising Hell feat. Big Freedia」のミュージック・ビデオの監督を務めた。本映像の中でケシャはDV夫を殺害してしまうセレブな宣教師を演じている。
2017年に発表したサード・アルバム『レインボー』が全米アルバムチャート1位を獲得し、グラミー賞にノミネートされた。本作ではダンス・フロアーを揺らすケシャらしいポップ・ソングをはじめ、彼女のセンスが光るラップ調の楽曲や、フォーキーで感情的な楽曲などバラエティー豊かな全15曲が収録されている。

Borrowing at least one trick from Kacey Musgraves, Kesha calls her fourth album High Road, leaning into the dual meaning of high. Shes appealing to her better angels but shes eager to party and who can blame her? Kesha spent the back half of the 2010s embroiled in a series of nasty legal battles with her former producer and collaborator Dr. Luke, a struggle chronicled in part on Rainbow, the 2017 album that found her reemerging after a period of darkness. Now that her heavy lifting is out of the way, shes ready to reconnect with her roots as a funny, trashy pop prankster; the persona that made her a star a decade prior to the 2020 release of High Road. Time changes everything, though, and its hard to hear High Road without thinking of the events that led to it. Keshas smart enough to deal with this situation head on, opening the album with a call to party (Tonight) followed by My Own Dance, a defiant rallying call that pivots upon her dismissing being pigeonholed by labels: youre the party girl/youre the tragedy/but the funny thing/Im f*****g everything. The rest of High Road finds Kesha proving this statement true, bouncing between a slamming collaboration with Big Freedia and a sensitive duet with alt-country troubadour Sturgill Simpson, stopping proceedings for both a treacly retro-synth pop ode to friendship and a bit of thudding carnival music. Jokes abound: the tongue-in-cheek Kinky allegedly features a cameo by Kinky Spice, Birthday Suit bops along to vintage video game bleeps, and Kesha swears like a sailor throughout. Its designed to be a heady good time and it often is, even if theres a slight air of desperation in Keshas hedonistic desires; at the albums wildest and dirtiest moments, theres a sense that her heart isnt quite into the revelry. Still, those moments are few and theyre overshadowed by the sheer joie de vivre of Kesha feeling the freedom to be so silly she doesnt care if she falls on her face. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

〈TikTok〉というワードを耳にするといまでも真っ先にケシャのことを思い出す……という人はまあまあの年齢だとしても、デビューから数年のヒット街道を驀進する彼女には目を見張るものがあった。ただ、同時期に台頭していたレディ・ガガと競うほどの活躍から一転、本人名義作のリリースは『Warrior』(2012年)で途絶え、やがて当時のメンターであったドクター・ルークとの訴訟によってその背景が明らかにされると共に、しばらく彼女は音楽活動を停滞させざるを得なくなってしまったのだ。それだけに2017年の3作目『Rainbow』が全米1位を獲得し、グラミーにもノミネートされたのは喜ばしいカムバック劇だった。そして、それから約2年ぶりとなる今回のニュー・アルバム『High Road』を聴いて感じるのは何とも言えない活力だ。ルーツ志向の色合いも濃くした前作がある種のリハビリ感がある一枚だったとしたら、今回は苦しみを乗り越えたうえで、改めて絶頂期の続きを描く意志を見せた作品だと言えるのかもしれない。そうでなくても、ポップなダンス・トラックやラップ・チューン、フォーキーなナンバーなど、鮮やかな彩りがケシャの持ち味を出し惜しみなく表現しているのは間違いないだろう。
複数のプロデューサーを迎えたのも奏功していて、ヴェテランのジェフ・バスカーやジョン・ヒル、ドリュー・ピアソンやスチュアート・クライトンらが楽曲ごとに異なる彼女の魅力を引き出している。なかでも重要なのは、ビッグ・フリーダを迎えた賑やかなポップ・バウンスの先行ヒット"Raising Hell"を手掛けたカナダのスティントだ。彼は冒頭の"Tonight"から都合4曲をプロデュースし、エッジーな新しいケシャ像に寄与。コラボの妙味という意味では、スタージル・シンプソンとブライアン・ウィルソン(!)、レイベルを迎えた穏やかなカントリーの"Resentment"も絶品。同曲を制作したジョン・ヒルはブーティーでアグレッシヴな"My Own Dance"も手掛けて硬軟自在に手腕を発揮している。かように多彩な表情が楽しめる『High Road』、控えめに言っても完全復活と叫んでおきたくなるような快作だ。
