Jamison Isaak cites the French house wave of the late 90s as a primary inspiration for his career as a musician. His lengthy discography as Teen Daze includes jangly indie pop as well as lush chillwave and reflective ambient pieces, and up to this point, most of his beat-focused compositions have felt restrained and introverted, and more appropriate for studying than dancing. Interior feels like a conscious attempt to emulate the electronica era more directly. Following a gentle, subtly glitched-out ambient piece featuring saxophonist Joseph Shabason, "Swimming" is a shimmering dance track that gradually develops a rosy trance melody, although it doesnt quite swell up to epic proportions. "Nite Run" is a more direct channeling of the French Touch sound, with swirls of choppy samples and a hint of funk to its throbbing beats. Isaak excels when he attempts to make progressive house epics, such as "No Where," which starts out detached but gradually gains a propulsive, cruising beat. The album-ending "Translation" similarly unfolds, easing into its thumping beat before bursting with celebratory saxophones and joyous vocal samples. The only song with full vocals is "2 AM (Real Love)," which features Montreal-based singer/songwriter Cecile Believe, who has collaborated with artists such as Kero Kero Bonito, SOPHIE, and Austra. Believes slightly robotic vocals are carried by the tracks sunny groove, and a splash of ravey pianos arrive near the songs uplifting finish. Isaak seems to prefer dance music thats detailed and expressive but not gaudy and over-the-top, and his most club-friendly album to date is vibrant and wondrous without being brash and anthemic. ~ Paul Simpson
