若きフランスのチェリスト、エドガー・モローによる、20世紀の4人の作曲家コルンゴルト、ブロッホ、ブルッフ、ラヴェルによる、チェロのためのユダヤに関連した協奏的作品集

ブロッホの『ユダヤ人の生活から』は、アンコール曲としても有名な「祈り」が含まれる作品集。ヘブライ狂詩曲『シェロモ』の「シェロモ」とは、旧約聖書におけるソロモン王のことで、独奏チェロがソロモン王として曲が進行していきます。ブロッホのユダヤの世界観に根差した音楽性を壮絶な情念として書かれています。
コルンゴルトの傑作ヴァイオリン協奏曲の翌年に作曲されたチェロ協奏曲は、女流ピアニストを巡るチェリストと作曲家の三角関係を描いた映画「愛憎の曲」に書いた曲を拡大改作したもの。モダンなハーモニーや洗練された響きの曲で、チェロのソロが緻密に濃厚に表現されています。
ユダヤ教で礼拝の際に用いられる朗誦の旋律に基づいたブルッフの『コル・ニドライ』。異国趣味や民俗音楽を次々と取り入れたラヴェルの、アラム語による典礼文をテクストにした「頌栄(カディッシュ)」が第1曲に置かれた『2つのヘブライの歌』など、ユダヤ人のルーツとの深いつながりや、ユダヤの音楽に関連したチェロのための作品という意欲的なプログラム。
叙情的、情熱的、そして官能的な美しいモローの音は、「叙事詩的な広大なエレジー」を、歌心あるチェロ演奏の可能性を求めたものとなっています。

Perhaps the album is poorly timed; the Transmission of its title refers not to a virus but to the transmission of tradition in its musical materials and their realization. Cellist Edgar Moreau, Jewish on his mothers side, delivers richly lyrical performances of pieces either by Jewish composers or using Jewish materials. This strand of classical music too often begins and ends with Max Bruchs Kol nidrei, Op. 47, and perhaps Ernest Blochs Schelomo, and both are heard here, in fine performances. However, Moreau structures the program around works that he himself encountered during his training, and this brings in some lesser-known pieces. Blochs From Jewish Life is arguably a superior work to Schelomo, fusing the Jewish program with traditional form in a more subtle way, and Ravels Deux Melodies Hebraiques provide a conclusion that hints at deeper spiritual issues. As for Erich Korngolds Cello Concerto, Op. 37, originally part of the score for the 1946 film Deception, the work seems intended to emphasize the secular side of Jewish music, but its lovely slow movement reveals its kinship to the other works on the album. Kol nidrei and Schelomo have been staples of concert life and recordings for decades, but Moreau effectively expands the field here.
