アニマル・コレクティヴによる6年ぶり最新作!

90年代半ば、ボルチモアの友人同士で自然発生的に結成、現在はエイヴィ・テア、ディーキン、パンダ・ベア、ジオロジストの4人で活動をするアニマル・コレクティヴ。
今までにリリースしてきた作品は全てその年を代表する作品として賞賛を受け、メインストリーム、アンダーグラウンドを行き来し、常に新たな音楽を探求し続けることで21世紀を代表するバンドとして君臨し続けている。
そんな彼らがスタジオ・アルバムとしては『Painting With』(2016年)以来となる最新作『Time Skiffs』を〈Domino〉よりリリース。20年以上に渡って活動を続ける彼らは、当初から実験的なアプローチを取り入れつつも時代を超えて愛されるクラシックな楽曲を作り続け、音楽シーンに大きな影響を与え続けてきた。
6年ぶりのスタジオ・アルバム『Time Skiffs』は、彼らの無秩序なキャリア初期や2007年の『Strawberry Jam』リリース時のような空気が感じられる作品で、アルバムに収録された9曲は、ラブレターであり、遭難信号でもあり、空中観察であり、リラックスした楽曲群でもあり、人間関係や子育てなど、大人の悩みを抱えるようになった4人が集めたメッセージでもある。
それらはアニマル・コレクティヴ特有の探究心に満ちた不思議な感覚で表現されており、これまでと一貫した作風が感じられる。
スカイダイビングしたくなるような浮遊感を感じる豊かなハーモニーがあり、神秘的で解読したくなるようなテクスチャーがあり、その源流を解明したくなるような複雑なリズムがある。アニマル・コレクティヴは20年という活動期間を経ても、新たな表現を探し続けている。

『Time Skiffs』にはこれからの未来への不安や、今直面している瞬間への困惑、悲しみや混乱、嘆きが詰め込まれている。しかし、同時に『Time Skiffs』の中には生きる喜びがあり、愛や人生や自然や人に対する期待が存在している。4曲目の「Strung With Everything」に登場する"It's really new every day "という一節は、誇張されたテーゼとしてではなく、純粋な実感として湧き出てきたものであり、これこそが『Time Skiffs』の根底にあるものだと言える。

Following their disorienting and disorganized 2016 album Painting With, Animal Collective took a several-years-long sidebar into the more experimental and abstract side of their output. Though always a modular entity (even on their most popular releases), projects after Painting With felt especially so, with various combinations of members coming together for drifty soundtracks, conceptual albums, and decidedly structure-averse material released under the Animal Collective banner. Time Skiffs qualifies as a "proper" album, reuniting all four members on an album for the first time since 2012s Centipede Hz and returning to as pop-friendly a sound as a band known for their unpredictability is capable of. For Animal Collective, that means floating melody and angular hooks on top of their colorfully chaotic arrangements. Coming off a six-year stretch full of subaquatic ambience and wobbly acoustic meditations, the straightforwardness of opening track "Dragon Slayer" is almost jarring. Its a breezy shift between various two-chord vamps dotted by happy synth melodies, rising and falling dynamically in a way that recalls the bands more rock-leaning releases, like 2005s Feels or 2007s Strawberry Jam. Other songs follow suit to various degrees. "Strung with Everything" opens with a minute or so of reverb-slathered bell sounds and clouds of formless guitar noodling, but then quickly shifts gears by dropping a steam-powered drum beat and a slippery bass groove. Panda Bear and Avey Tares dual vocal harmonies wind through sunny verses on this song, and the sing-song melodies and grinning character directly recall Terrapin Station-era Grateful Dead, one of the bands oft-cited influences that isnt always easy to locate in their blurrier material. Theres still plenty of experimentation happening here, but instead of every idea happening at once, as is sometimes the case on the bands busier albums, watery atmospheres and uncommon instrumentation are all couched in more-coherent songs. Theres more of a locked-in funkiness than usual, as well, with songs like "Cherokee" and "Walker" offering up streamlined bass grooves amid their gamelan twittering and celestial breakdowns. "We Go Back" approaches an especially demented kind of jazz fusion with its tight riffing and autotuned vocal layers. Its admirable that Time Skiffs finds Animal Collective returning to the pop side of their vision without trying to completely replicate the pristine electronics and party-starting rhythms of their most celebrated phases. Instead of regressing or stepping away from the edge when their sound grew too unhinged, the band continues to evolve in unforecastable directions on Time Skiffs. Its an especially lucid reading of the sound theyve been perfecting for over two decades at this point, and one that adds a human warmth to a group thats long been defined by their otherworldly nature. ~ Fred Thomas
