R.シュトラウス: 歌曲、町人貴族、「サロメ」より

LPOレーベルから、アーカイヴ録音のテンシュテット(1926-1998)が登場!病魔におかされながらもますます壮絶かつ誰をも黙らせるようなテンションの演奏を展開していた時期の1986年5月4日の演奏会ライヴ、オール・R.シュトラウスです。ジェシー・ノーマン(1945-2019)との共演はどれも初出。ノーマンは初来日(1985年)とほぼ同時期の、超充実の絶頂期に録音されたもの。圧倒的なパワーは、やはり彼女にしかなしえないもの。「サロメ」の抜粋も、「7つのヴェールの踊り」でのオケのものすごい爆発ぶりに驚きます。テンシュテットは歌があってもオーケストラを熱く鳴らし、ノーマンのパワー漲る歌唱がオーケストラの力を借りてより何倍もの迫力でせまります。この世のものとは思えない壮絶な大熱演となっています!!!R.シュトラウスの「町人貴族」は、初出ではありませんが、典雅さを存分に引き出しながら、軽妙な味わいとユーモアも加わった、巨匠の余裕が感じられる演奏で、ノーマンとの共演の演目とはまた違った一面が打ち出されているといえます。テンシュテットは1977年にLPOと初共演、1983年から首席指揮者・音楽監督に就任、98年に亡くなるまでその座にありました。彼のエネルギー、音楽性、感情のこもった音楽、そしてたぐいまれなる謙虚さが深く愛されていたことが、このライヴからあらためて強く感じられます。こうして1日の演奏会のライヴが1枚となって登場することにより、ライヴの感動と興奮を追体験できる、大迫力かつ貴重な1枚となっています!!!!

These Richard Strauss performances were recorded in 1986 at Londons Royal Festival Hall by soprano Jessye Norman, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Klaus Tennstedt. The album hit best-seller lists when it was released 36 years later, in 2022, a success due to the fact that the performances found Norman in absolutely splendid voice. Norman was always an enthusiastic performer of orchestral song, but she rarely did better than in the assorted Strauss songs that open the program, scaling the entire structure of her voice down to the warm sentiments of a song like Cacilie, Op. 27, No. 2, dedicated by Strauss to his wife, Pauline, for their 1894 wedding day. Norman and Tennstedt worked together multiple times during this period, and their obvious sympathy is one of the performances draws. Tennstedt is lively on his own in the Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Op. 60, which forms a kind of entracte. The opera Salome is undoubtedly up Normans alley. The BBCs live sound is quite good for 1986, but Norman is a bit far back in the mix. This does not seriously impede ones enjoyment of this historical gem, however, and some of the enthusiastic applause at the conclusion is rightly retained.
