比類無き歌声とソング・ライティングで"インディー・ロック界の高貴な女王"と評されるキャット・パワーの最新作『Covers』リリース!!

30年以上にわたる活動の中で唯一無二の存在感を発揮し、"インディー・ロック界の高貴な女王"と評されるキャット・パワーことショーン・マーシャル。
その比類無き歌声、ソング・ライティングはラナ・デル・レイ、クレイロ、サッカー・マミー、フィービー・ブリジャーズ、ジュリアン・ベイカー、エンジェル・オルセンといった多くの新世代アーティスト達にも影響を与え続けている。
これまでのキャリアで『The Covers Record』『Jukebox』という2枚のカヴァー・アルバムをリリースし、原曲の新たな魅力を引き出すことでオリジナル・アルバム級の高評価を得てきた。
そんなカヴァー・シリーズの3枚目となる最新作『Covers』を〈Domino〉よりリリース。
幼少期から現在までに影響を受けた楽曲を振り返っており、それぞれの歌が私的な思い出に深く結びついている。
ビリー・ホリデイの「I'll Be Seeing You」は祖母が愛聴しており、キティ・ウェルズの「It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels」は10代のころにカセットテープが詰まった箱を見つけて運命的な出会いをした。
さらに、1986年のマイケル・ハッチェンス出演の映画『ドッグ・イン・スペース』でイギー・ポップの「Endless Sea」を聴いて震えるほど興奮したことや、貧しいアーティストとしてニューヨークで過ごしていた20代のころにモナズ・バーのジュークボックスになけなしの金を払ってリプレイスメンツの「Here Comes a Regular」を聴いた思い出などが詰め込まれている。
マーシャルは、ニコやニック・ケイヴといったロックンロールを象徴するアーティストをカヴァーするだけでなく、誰にも真似のできないパワフルなボーカルと洗練されたアレンジの技を現代のアーティストたちの楽曲でも発揮し、デッド・マンズ・ボーンズの「Pa Pa Power」の反骨精神や、ラナ・デル・レイの「A White Mustang」の幻想的な雰囲気を見事に表現している。
今回の『Covers』で、絶えず進化を続けるアーティストであるマーシャルは、自身の曲である「Hate」(2006年『The Greatest』収録)の改変に取り組んでおり、曲中で彼女は「自分のことが大嫌いで死んでしまいたい」と歌っていた。
マーシャルによれば、このトラックについてはずっと「不本意」だという気持ちがあり、そこで今回「Unhate」というタイトルで再構成することにしたという。

From the cover of Tom Waits "Yesterday Is Here" on Dear Sir to the version of Rihannas "Stay" on Wanderer, reinterpreting the work of artists she loves has always been a key part of Chan Marshalls music. Roughly once a decade, she serves up an albums worth of thoughtfully chosen and performed covers; the first, 2000s Covers Album, came out of a period when she needed to find respite from writing her own songs. Since then, shes used these collections as reflections of where she is as an artist and a person. Coming after 2018s wounded yet liberated Wanderer, Covers shares a similar state of mind. Some of the best moments find her reflecting on friends, lovers, and identities lost to time, as on her hushed version of "Ill Be Seeing You," a tribute to Philippe Zdar, the late producer who worked with her on Sun. Two other highlights, "Against the Wind" and "A Pair of Brown Eyes" -- which trades the Pogues squeezebox and pipes for a woozy Mellotron -- focus on the passing of time and changing perspectives on life, and Marshall strips both of their swagger to bring their poignancy to the fore. She also manages to make her version of "Here Comes a Regular" sound even more desolate than the Replacements original, and transforms the exquisitely aloof sorrow of Nicos "These Days" into an up-close confessional. As on The Covers Record and Jukebox, Marshall unifies the sound of all the songs she pays tribute to into something unmistakably hers. Backed by her Wanderer band, she brings a somber sultriness to Frank Oceans "Bad Religion," recognizes another expert balladeer with her sweltering version of Lana Del Reys "White Mustang," and zooms in on the battle between despair and hope within "Pa Pa Power," a song by Ryan Goslings underappreciated indie band Dead Mans Bones. And like so many other times during her career, she does a lot with a little on "It Wasnt God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," using barely more than an upright bass and pedal steel (and, of course, her warm, knowing vocals) to connect with Kitty Wells original and make it her own. Covers is a treat for fans, and reaffirms that Marshall can find the Cat Power -- as well as new meanings -- in the music that moves her. ~ Heather Phares
