Seligpreisung

天空から降り注ぐオーガニックでアンビエントな魔法の音楽…
プログレッシヴ/エクスペリメンタル/アンビエント・ミュージックの先駆者的存在として知られる、故フローリアン・フリッケ率いるドイツが生んだ至宝、ポポル・ヴー。彼らが1973年に発表した通算4作目となる名作『SELIGPREISUNG(邦題: 聖なる賛美)』が、最新リマスター音源を採用したデジパック仕様CDとなってここに登場!

1970年に故フローリアン・フリッケを中心にドイツのミュンヘンで結成された、エレクトロニック・ミュージックとプログレッシヴ・ロックの先駆者の一つとして知られる至宝、ポポル・ヴー。初期のエレクトロなサウンドからよりオーガニックでアコースティックなサウンドまで、その多彩な表現方法で至上のサウンドスケープを奏でる彼らは、以降何世代にもわたって数多くのミュージシャンに影響を与え続けている。

彼らが1970年代から1980年代にかけて発表した、アコースティックでアンビエントな4枚の重要作品をコンパイルした豪華180グラム重量盤アナログ・ボックス・セット『VOL. 2 - ACOUSTIC & AMBIENT SPHERES』の発売に合わせ、同作収録の4枚のアルバムがデジパック仕様の最新リマスター音源を採用したCDとなってそれぞれリリースされることとなった。今回リリースとなるのは、73年の『SELIGPREISUNG(邦題: 聖なる賛美)』、ヴェルナー・ヘルツォーク監督作品『HERZ AUS GLAS(邦題: ガラスの心)』のサウンドトラックでもある77年の『COEUR DE VERRE(邦題: ガラスの心)』、83年の『AGAPE AGAPE(邦題: アガペー・神の愛)』、そして同じくヘルツォーク監督作品『COBRA VERDE(邦題: コブラ・ヴェルデ)』のサウンドトラックとなる87年の『COBRA VERDE』という4枚のアルバムだ。各アルバムにはそれぞれボーナス・トラックが1曲づつ追加収録されている。

『SELIGPREISUNG』(1973年作品)
通算4作目となる今作は、彼らのキャリアにおいてマイルストーン的作品として称されるまるで讃美歌のような前作『HOSIANNA MANTRA』に比べ、ロックという音楽的要素を加え、バンドを次なるステップへと進める作品となった。Amon Duul IIのダニエル・フィッヒェルシャーが新たにバンドに参加し、ギターとドラムを担当した今作以降、ダニエルはフローリアンにとって重要な仲間となり、その後数年間にわたり、ポポル・ヴーのサウンドにロック的な要素を大きく押し出していくことになった。今作では主に西洋の楽器を使い非西洋的なサウンドを構築する、彼らの典型的であり神秘的な素晴らしさを強く感じさせてくれる名作だ。ボーナス・トラックとして収録されている非常に美しい楽曲「Be In Love」は、アルバムの直前にレコーディングされていたシングル曲。

Released in 1973, Seligpreisung was, if anything, a complete shock after the gorgeous "religious" rock of Hosianna Mantra. Gone are the hypnotic Gregorian chants and overtone layers of drone. In their place is a kind of shimmering, spacy jazz-rock where, despite a few instances of Florian Fricke chant-singing, the effect is one where his piano becomes the steadiest backdrop, playing hypnotic, repetitive chords and phrases while Conny Veit improvises with David Gilmour-like blues guitar phrases over the gently swirling music. Elsewhere, the rest of the group (the same cats who played on Hosianna Mantra) is heard in classically tinged miniatures that float through the mix with a kind of meandering insistence on instantly recognizable Western thematics and standard conceptions of beauty rather than confrontations -- however subtle -- with the East/West space-time continuum. This is not to say that Seligpreisung is a disappointment; rather, it is only a shock for its giant step backward into the realm of the conventional. Perhaps Hosianna Mantra presented an abyss, and as Fricke looked over it musically, he realized that its beauty was unbearable. For whatever the reason, Seligpreisung is a meditative, generally quiet, and lovely album, but it doesn't go near the precipice. ~ Thom Jurek
