メシアンの歌劇《アッシジの聖フランチェスコ》が小澤征爾の指揮で1983年に初演された再、メシアンから直々にアシスタントに指名されていたのがケント・ナガノ。メシアンから高く評価されていたケント・ナガノは、その後もメシアン作品を積極的にプログラムに採り入れてきました。2000年にベルリン・フィルと録音した「トゥーランガリラ交響曲」(2000年)は、隅々まで解釈されて明晰に聞こえる演奏で、"複雑、難解"といった聴き手が持つこの作品のイメージを根本的に変えるほどの鮮烈な印象を与えるなど、現代最高のメシアン指揮者の一人と見なされています。
この3枚組は、そんなケント・ナガノによるメシアンの3作品のライヴ録音を収録。メインとなるのは1965年から1969年に書かれた、5管編成の巨大オーケストラ、100人の合唱団、ソリストと打楽器を含む7つの独奏楽器を要する『われらの主イエス・キリストの変容』で、ピアノを担当するのはおなじみピエール=ロラン・エマール、また美しいチェロのソロを披露するのはバイエルン放送交響楽団の首席チェロ奏者を務めるリオネル・コテという期待に違わぬもの。大編成のオーケストラが紡ぎ出す複雑なリズムと、陶然とするような響きをかいくぐって聞こえてくる鳥の声や合唱による神秘的なコラールなど、メシアンの創作の頂点ともいえる作品を存分に楽しませてくれます。他にはメシアンの最初の妻クレール・デルボスに捧げられた「ミのための詩」、やはり鳥の声が重要な働きを見せる「クロノクロミー」を収録。
