ノルウェーの「文化遺産」ともいうべきオペラの序曲&バレエ集!

グリーグやスヴェンセンが優れた作品を次々と発表した1860年代の終わり、ノルウェーの文化生活は黄金時代を迎えたといわれます。LAWO Classicsのこのアルバムでは、グリーグたちの以前、ノルウェー音楽の基礎が作られた時代と、その後の時代に作曲されたノルウェーの「文化遺産」ともいうべきオペラの序曲とバレエが、ノルウェー国立オペラ管弦楽団とインガル・ベルグビューの演奏で紹介されます。

ヴァルデマル・トラーネ(1790-1828)の《山の物語》は、ヘンリク・アンケル・ビェッレゴーの1927年に映画化もされた同名の劇に基づく作品。マッティン・アンドレーアス・ウードビュー(1820-1889)の《平和の少女》は、12世紀のノルウェー王マグヌス三世と結婚したスウェーデン王女マルガレータ・フレドクッラ(平和の少女)が題材にとられたオペラです。ワーグナーの音楽からインスピレーションを得たヨハンネス・ホールクロウ(1847-1925)の《イスタンブールのヴァイキング》。交響詩《アスゴールの騎行》や交響曲ト長調(Sterling CDS10862)のオーレ・オールセン(1850-1927)の《ライヤ》。シーグヴァルト・アスペシュトラン(1856-1942)の「バレエつき4幕」の歌劇《リュシュコウスハイドの英雄》は、全曲の演奏がまだ行われていない作品です。ニコライ・ゴーゴリの小説『タラス・ブーリバ』を基にエドヴァルド・ハーゲルプ・ブルが執筆した台本によるカタリヌス・エリング(1858-1942)の《コサック兵たち》。イプセンの戯曲によるアルネ・エッゲン(1881-1955)の《オラヴ・リリエクランス》。これらの作品がほとんど知られていない一方、ホーコン・ヤールのメルフス訪問を題材にしたヤルマル・ボルグストレム(1864-1925)の《リーモルのトーラ》は、復活上演され、全曲録音も作られています。

The music on this album is unknown, even in Norway, and the albums goal, according to Norwegian National Opera music director Havard Vegge, is to make the music accessible to listeners in the hope of generating new interest in and discussion about why this part of our cultural heritage has been left to lie untouched. Despite the modest and local dimensions of this aim, the album has hit the top ranks of sales charts beyond Norway, suggesting not only the strength of interest in the music of the periphery but also the enjoyable qualities of the music. These overtures and the operas from which they come were forgotten probably due to comparison with Grieg, who started an opera but left it unfinished. They dont manage his evocation of national spirit, yet these overtures and dances, dating from between 1825 and 1940, draw on a wide variety of sources. The Fjeldeventyret Overture by Waldemar Thrane is in the Weber vein, with a nice dramatic development within the main fast section. Other works draw on Wagner, such as the Vaeringene i Miklagard Overture (did you know that Miklagard was the Viking name for Constantinople?), with the pleasing effect of hearing the locals treat the Norse mythology that inspired Wagner. Theres an overture to a German-language opera, some that reflect Russian influences, and some that aspire to a mainstream late Romantic sound. Almost all the pieces are part of operas that were successful in their own time and maintain appeal in ours, and they receive lively, clean performances by the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra, an ensemble that will be new to most listeners, under Ingar Bergby. The commercial success of this album from the always innovative Lawo Classics label is no surprise.
