The three EPs compiled on Lee Gambles Flush Real Pharynx 2019-2021 are themed around the concept of the semioblitz, a term coined by the late cultural theorist Mark Fisher that Gamble uses to describe the aggressive onslaught of visual & sonic stimuli of contemporary cities & virtual spaces. Over the releases 22 tracks, Gamble incorporates real-world sounds like racing cars and breaking glass as well as synthetic voices, artfully expressing the physical rush of urban life while dipping into the paranoia of modern technology and media saturation. In a Paraventral Scale, the first EP, starts off with a piece similar to Gambles earlier explorations of the ambient interludes from jungle records, then tickles the ears with the prickly, vibrato-heavy arpeggios of Folding. BMW Shuanghuan X5 builds an ominous drone from the sound of a revving car engine, and In the Wreck Room accelerates, pinning shuffling breakbeats to spacious synths and detached R&B vocals, and a repeated snippet about ghosts. Second EP Exhaust is much more intense and beat-heavy, with erratic, adrenaline-rush rhythms and encouraging yet soulless voices pushing products and self-help guidance. Its easily the most fun third of the triptych, with Envenom splashing nostalgic rave synths on fractured garage breaks, Tyre attaching trickling xylophones to bounding drumnbass, and Switches spiking angular grime beats with dog barks. Shards is a super banger juxtaposing ASMR-like whispering with scrambled ragga vocals, and Saccades is a jungle track being thoroughly shoved down a vortex. A Million Pieces of You, the only part of the trilogy finished and released post-pandemic, is startling and jarring in a much different way. Gamble splices a deepfake of his own voice into the dizzying soundscape of Balloon Lossy, and Obsession Model is a stiff monologue about finding celebrity infatuation more chaotic than real life. The title of Hyperpassive perfectly sums up its combination of pressurized IDM rhythms and atmospheric tranquility, ending up both soothing and energetic. Gambles most ambitious work to date, Flush Real Pharynx is compelling commentary about the exciting yet frightening state of modern living. ~ Paul Simpson

ドローン、エレクトロニカ、突如として降り注ぐ強烈なビートとインダストリアルの嵐……ハイパーダブで2019～21年にリリースした3部作のEPが一枚にコンパイル。EPのうち2作はパンデミック以前に出されたものだが、改めて聴いてみればその音は未来的だというだけでなく、どことなく来たる激動の現代を予見していたかのように感じてしまうのは考えすぎだろうか……身体を内と外から刺激する創造的な音楽の決定打。
