The Solution Is Restless

ジョーン・アズ・ポリス・ウーマンことジョーン・ワッサーがニュー・アルバムをリリース。ザ・インヴィジブルのフロントマン、デイヴ・オクムと先ごろ亡くなった伝説のドラマー、トニー・アレンと書かれ、レコーディングされた『ザ・ソリューション・イズ・レストレス』リリース。

「Damon Albarnが2019年3月におこなわれたAfrica Expressのイヴェント、The Circusで、アフロビートのレジェンド、Tony Allenを紹介してくれた。Tonyと私はNina Simoneの"I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free"をプレイし、一緒にレコーディングすることを決めた。古くからの友人であったDave Okumuにロンドンンから来てもらい、一晩中、ジャムをした。そして、ロックダウンに入った時、私はその時にレコーディングしたものを使って『The Solution Is Restless』を書いた」とJoanは語る。

世界が止まっていた時、Joanは音楽の制作/リリースを続けた。Damon AlbarnとGorillazのアルバム『Song Machine』収録の「Simplicity」を書き、レコーディング。2枚目のカヴァー・アルバム『Cover Two』と初のライヴ・アルバム『Live』をリリースし、Afel Bocoumのアルバム『Linde』にも参加した。

Tony Allenは1968年から1979年にかけ、Fela Kutiのバンド、Africa 70のドラマー/ミュージカル・ディレクターを務め、Fela Kutiと共にアフロビートを作り上げたことで知られる。Dave Okumuはマーキュリー・プライズにもノミネートされたバンド、The Invisibleのフロントマンで、9月にはソロ・アルバム『Knopperz』をリリース。

A mercurial three-way collaboration between pop auteur Joan Wasser, Afro-beat icon Tony Allen, and producer Dave Okumu, The Solution Is Restless is a rangy and intriguing platter. Following her 2019 retrospective and subsequent covers project, this marks Wassers first new Joan as Police Woman material since 2018 and is among the final recordings made by Allen, who died in April 2020. The connecting thread between these two artists is apparently their mutual friend Damon Albarn, who introduced them in 2019 and also appears on a song here. Completing the projects primary triangle is Dave Okumu, frontman for the eclectic London group the Invisible. With little obvious direction, the trio gathered in a Paris recording studio for an evening of free-form improvisations to which Wasser later added lyrics and sculpted into this unique ten-song set. Stitched together by sparse keyboard parts, Allens stuttering drum patterns, and muted guitar stabs, The Solution Is Restless is a sophisticated mood piece with an enchanting late-night feel. Rarely has Wasser sounded so seductive and strange as on highlights like the eerie, string-adorned Dinner Date or the slow-drip art-funk of 11-minute opener The Barbarian. Background murmurs and distant strings create the icy backdrop of Enter the Dragon while Allen explores with the nimble finesse of a master instrumentalist. Its an album to inhabit and get lost in -- a headphone gem of subtle shivers and slow transitions birthed by unexpected bedfellows. Everyone involved shines, but for Wasser, its a feather in her cap and an excellent way to kick off the next phase in what continues to be an exciting career. ~ Timothy Monger

ジョーン・アズ・ポリス・ウーマンとアフロ・サウンドといえば『Let It Be You』(2016年)を思い出すが、ロンドンで実現した3人のセッションを基にしたこのアルバムはもっとスポンティニアスな作品なんじゃないかと想像する。その密室感も含めジョーンならではのユニークなR&Bには違いないが、ファンキーで、よりプログレ的な仕上がりに。彼女にトニー・アレンを引き合わせたデーモン・アルバーンも1曲参加している。
