1990年代のブリット・ポップ・シーンにおいて、そのキャッチーでポップなギター・ロックで一躍人気者となったオックスフォード出身のスーパーグラス。6枚の全英TOP10アルバム、そして10枚の全米TOP20シングルを世に送り出し、BRITアウォーズにQマガジン・アウォーズ、NMEアウォーズに、アイヴァー・ノヴェロ賞など英国の重要音楽賞を数々受賞している彼らは、2010年に解散を発表、その後は各自ソロ・アーティストやサポート・メンバーとしての活動を行っていた。その彼らは2019年、10年以上ぶりに再集結し、グラストンベリー・フェスティバルが主催するイベント、Pilton Partyにサプライズ出演。グレイテスト・ヒッツ的なセットリストで会場を沸かせた彼らは、さらに翌2020年春、UKとヨーロッパで再結成ツアーも行った。その後、アメリカやオーストラリアを回り、夏には数々のフェスティヴァルにも出演する予定だったが、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大によりキャンセルとなっている。

そのスーパーグラスにとってセカンド・スタジオ・アルバムであり、Qマガジンが"彼ら初の傑作フル・アルバム"と満点レビューで絶賛した『IN IT FOR THE MONEY』が最新リマスター音源で復刻される。オリジナル・リリース以来のアナログLPリリースとなる本作は180グラム重量盤のアナログLPに12インチ・シングルがついた2枚組となる。

1997年4月21日にリリースされた『IN IT FOR THE MONEY』は、全英アルバム・チャートの2位を飾り、英国ではプラチナ・アルバムにも認定された世界的ミリオン・セラー・アルバムである。NMEからは1997年のTOP10アルバムの1枚に選ばれた本作からは、「Going Out」(全英5位)、暗く濃おn密でヘビーな「Richard III」(全英2位)、「Sun Hits the Sky」(全英10位)、そしてみずみずしく物憂げな「Late In The Day」(全英18位)などのヒット・シングルが生まれている。ティーンエイジャーらしい陽気なポップ・サウンドに彩られたデビュー・アルバム『I SHOULD COCO』から脱皮し、ダークさや、頑なさ、さらには抑えきれない怒りを覗かせた本作は、安心安全な普通さと爽快なまでの奇妙さが共存するスーパーグラスの音世界を作り上げたアルバムでもあった。この大きなサウンド的躍進を実現するため、彼らはエンジニア/共同プロデューサーであるJohn CornfieldとSam Williamsの助けを借りながら、自らアルバムのプロデュースを手掛け、さらにはフロントマンのギャズ・クームスの弟であるキーボード奏者ロブをバンドの正式メンバーとして迎えている。

2019年に復活を果たしたスーパーグラス。昨年デビューから25周年を迎えた彼らは今年夏にはUKツアーを行うことも発表している。再結成について「俺たちはただ、演奏してみてどうなるのか、試してみたいのさ」とインタビューで語っていたという彼らの歴史はまだまだ終わらない。そんな彼らの音楽的進化を語る上で外せない傑作が、待望のアナログLPで蘇る!

Supergrass' debut album, I Should Coco, rushed by at such a blinding speed that some listeners didn't notice the melodic complexity of its best songs. On its second album, the cleverly titled In It for the Money, Supergrass brought the songs to the forefront, slowing the tempos considerably and constructing a varied, textured album that makes the band's ambition and skill abundantly clear. From the droning mantra of the opening title track, it's clear that the band has delved deeply into psychedelia, and hints of Magical Mystery Tour are evident throughout the album, from swirling organs and gurgling wah-wahs to punchy horn charts and human beatboxes. In fact, Supergrass has substituted the punky rush of I Should Coco for such sonic details, and while that means the band only occasionally touches upon the breakneck pace of its debut (the hard-driving "Richard III"), it also deepens its joyful exuberance with subtle songs and remarkably accomplished musicianship. There might not be a "Caught by the Fuzz" or "Alright" on In It for the Money, but that's not a problem, since the bright explosion of "Sun Hits the Sky" and the nervy "Tonight" are just as energetic, and the album features introspective numbers like the gorgeous "Late in the Day" and "It's Not Me" that give it substantial weight. And even with all this musical maturity, Supergrass hasn't sacrificed its good-natured humor, as the detailed production and the bizarre closer, "Sometimes I Make You Sad," make abundantly clear.
