協奏曲集に続き、ベートーヴェンの「英雄交響曲」も少人数で録音!

オランダの鬼才指揮者&フォルテピアニスト、アルテュール・スホーンデルヴルトと、スホーンデルヴルトの指揮のもと、フランスのブザンソンで結成されたピリオド・アンサンブル、「クリストフォリ」。古典派から初期ロマン派までの世界でもっとも革新的なアンサンブルの1つとして15年間国際的に活動しています。
20人前後の少人数によるベートーヴェンのピアノ協奏曲全集などのプロジェクトで話題を呼んできたスホーンデルヴルト&クリストフォリが、ついにベートーヴェンの交響曲もリリース!
今作でも1パート1人の計20人でベートーヴェンの「英雄」を演奏(コリオラン序曲は19人)。ベートーヴェンが大規模なオーケストラと仕事をするのが好きだったのも事実ですが、このエロイカ交響曲は、この作品が献呈されたロプコヴィツ侯の宮殿(ロプコヴィツ邸)で非公開初演(試演)が行われており、そのホールの演奏家は通常24名だったとのことです。

This performance of Beethovens Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55 (Eroica), and Coriolan Overture, Op. 62, is not exactly a historically oriented performance, although it uses period instruments. Conductor Arthur Schoonderwoerd freely concedes that Beethoven, and Mozart before him, loved to hear performances of their works by large orchestras. He reasons that Beethovens orchestral works were still often heard at the time in the houses of nobles, in rooms where there was space for perhaps two dozen musicians. Accordingly, he drastically cuts down the string sections of his Ensemble Cristofori to one stringed instrument per part, although the paired winds and brass are left alone. The effect is startling, and theres no denying that Schoonderwerd has created a genuinely novel interpretation of Beethovens Eroica, not easy to do in the case of one of the most-recorded orchestral works in the entire repertory.
