アメリカのピアニスト・作曲家キット・アームストロングがドイツ・グラモフォンのデビュー・アルバムで採り上げるのはウィリアム・バードとジョン・ブル。初期のイギリス作曲家たちの精神をよみがえらせています。もともとチェンバロに近いヴァージナルのために書かれた珍しい作品集です。キット・アームストロングは子供の頃にバードとブルの音楽に出会い、それ以来何度も彼らの音楽に戻ってきました。
アルバムに選んだ作品は特別な人たちの娯楽や儀式のための音楽などをはるかに超えたものとして発想され、瞑想にふける悲歌や熱狂的な行進曲から通俗的なメロディによる超絶技巧の変奏曲やブルの独創的なカノンまで、多岐にわたっています。CD2枚組。
ウィリアム・バード(c.1540-1623)もジョン・ブル(1562/3-1628)もエリザベス1世とその後継者ジェイムズ1世の黄金時代の王立礼拝堂楽員であり、彼らの死後400年を経てもそれに匹敵するものはないと言えるほど素晴らしい鍵盤音楽のレパートリーの確立に貢献しました。とはいえ、二人は非常に異なった性格で、それぞれが独特な音楽スタイルを発展させました。アームストロングにとってはこの違いがとても重要な意味を持っています。

To call William Byrd and John Bull visionaries of piano music, as pianist Kit Armstrong does here, may be taking it a bit far, but its not out of the question to perform English Renaissance keyboard music on the piano. Glenn Gould used to do so from time to time, and when the music of Byrd and especially Bull was first being unearthed, the piano was the default. Its likely, however, that the short pieces here have never received performances as detailed as these. Armstrong nicely differentiates the sober and classical Byrd from the wildly virtuosic Bull, whose music still has a distinctly experimental feel at a distance of four centuries. His execution of Bulls parallel runs is brilliant, and theres a delightfully fantasy-like quality to the variation sets. More generally, theres the kind of X factor here that comes from a performers total commitment to and enthusiasm for a body of music, with all kinds of striking details. The album is beautifully recorded, and for all except those to whom Renaissance music on a piano is just a bridge too far, it will be quite a revelation.
