近年、ソロ名義でのジャズ・ヴォーカル・アルバム、本体プリテンダーズの新作など活発に作品を発表、そのどれもが素晴らしい内容だったクリッシー・ハインド。新作はなんと、ボブ・ディランのカヴァー・アルバム。20年、コロナ禍のロックダウン期にバンドの盟友ジェイムズ・ウォルボーンと制作。チャド・ブレイクも共同プロデュースで参加。完成した楽曲の動画を次々にアップして、ステイホームな人々を癒していたのが本作に収録。「ショット・オブ・ラヴ」から(1)、「血の轍」から(2)、「インフィデル」から(4)などなど隠れた名曲を多めにピックアップしてて新鮮。アコースティックを基調としたシンプルなサウンドとクリッシーの歌声がじわりとしみる好作。(吉祥寺店:狩野)

1980年にプリテンダーズとしてデビューして以降、その姉御的な存在感で女性ロッカー最大のアイコンとしてシーンに君臨し続けるクリッシー・ハインド。プリテンダーズとして数々の世界的大ヒットを記録し、ソロ・アーティストとしてもそのカリスマ性に満ちたサウンドとパフォーマンスで、全世界のロック・ファンからだけでなく、メディア、そしてアーティスト達からも最大のリスペクトを受ける、ロック史における最も重要なアーティストだ。

その彼女がボブ・ディランの楽曲をカヴァーしたソロ・アルバムをリリースする。『STANDING IN THE DOORWAY: CHRISSIE HYNDE SINGS BOB DYLAN』は、彼女がプリテンダーズのバンドメイトであるジェイムズ・ウォルボーンとともに昨年レコーディングしたボブ・ディラン・ナンバーを収録したアルバムである。きっかけとなったのは、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大によるロックダウンの中、ジェイムズがクリッシーにディランが2020年に発表した17分にも亘る傑作「Murder Most Foul」を送ったことから。「この曲を聴いて、私の中で何もかもが大きく変わった」そうクリッシーは語り、さらに続ける。「自分の中に渦巻いていた気難しいムードから抜け出すことができたの」

ロックダウンの最中ということもあり、レコーディングはリモートで行われた。アルバムはほぼ、テキスト・メッセージのやりとりで進み、例えばジェイムズがアイディアをiphoneにとって送り、そこにクリッシーがヴォーカルを足して返し、そのやりとりをプロデューサーのチャド・ブレイクへ送って1つの楽曲にミックスダウンしていったという。そうして「You're a Big Girl Now」、「Love Minus Zero/No Limit」、「Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight」や「Every Grain of Sand」などのディランの楽曲がクリッシー・ハインドによって新たな解釈とサウンドとともにファンの元へと届けられた。

「ボブ(ディラン)のやること全て、どこかに笑いを誘う部分が入っているの。それはなによりも彼がコメディアンであるから。彼はいつも面白くて、いつも伝えたいことを持っている。それで私はジェイムズに"ねえ、ディランのカヴァーをやらない"って電話をかけて、すべてが始まった」
本アルバムの制作過程は映像にも収められており、ディランの80歳の誕生日に合わせてUKのSky Artsで放映されるドキュメンタリー番組「Tomorrow IS A Long Time」にフィーチャーされているという。クリッシー・ハインドによるボブ・ディランのカヴァー・アルバム。時代の風を映したインスピレーションに溢れたアルバムの登場だ。

Bob Dylans status as the most respected songwriter in rock has been holding firm for decades and isnt likely to be challenged any time soon. No matter how celebrated or venerable you may be, youre probably going to end up singing his praises at one time or another, and 40 years on from the release of the Pretenders instant-classic debut album, Chrissie Hynde certainly qualifies as celebrated and venerable, even if that description seems a bit stodgy for someone with plenty of creative vitality left. After the release of Dylans epic-length song Murder Most Foul in 2020, Hynde, who was sunk deep in creative doldrums, began revisiting his songbook, and soon she and Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne were passing files back and forth from their home studios, working out arrangements and embellishments for tunes penned by the Bard of Hibbing. This experiment in home recording grew into an album, and 2021s Standing in the Doorway: Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan finds her digging deep into nine of his songs. The arrangements are simple, often just Hyndes voice and her and Walbournes guitars, and the focus is firmly on her voice. Sounding smart, tough, thoughtful, and a little bit sexy, Hyndes vocals have always been strong and evocative, and she knows how to make her delivery work in favor of Dylans lyrics. The performances here are rarely groundbreaking, but Hynde the Songwriter clearly understands what makes these songs click, and uses that knowledge to take Hynde the Chanteuse through a handful of compelling performances, bringing color and shade to Dylans imagery and reinforcing the strengths of his wordplay. Hyndes confidence and intuition fill out these songs beautifully, and if the backings are simple, they confirm that while hes most acclaimed as a lyricist, Dylan knows how to write a great melody, and Hynde and Walbourne honor those as well. The lovely interpretation of In the Summertime from Dylans oft-maligned 1981 LP Shot of Love is a valid reminder that even his weakest albums include songs well worth investigating. With just nine tracks, Standing in the Doorway: Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan feels a bit more like an EP than a proper album, but Hyndes takes on Dylans songs are savvy and satisfying, and shes more than done right by one of her acknowledged inspirations. ~ Mark Deming

ステイホーム中に心の隙間を埋めてくれたクリッシー姐さんとジェイムズ・ウォルボーンによるボブ・ディランのカヴァー企画〈Dylan Lockdown Series〉。それを音盤化した本作にいままた癒されまくっている。ビターな歌唱の哀愁が香る"Sweetheart like You" や"Blind Willie McTell"など、この期に及んでまだ芸の伸びしろを感じさせる彼女がマジ頼もしくて。数あるディラン・ソングブックのなかでも極めて出色。
