The Naive labels Vivaldi Edition is a giant undertaking, aimed at recording the complete contents of a collection of Vivaldi in Turin -- 450 works in all. The series has been underway since early in the century and here reaches its 67th volume, which might cause the casual observer to wonder, didnt even Vivaldi have a bad day once in a while? The quality of the concertos here (and the commercial success of the release) suggest that there is no diminution of quality as the series proceeds. Naive has used various ensembles, mostly Italian and their French followers, in the series, but it is perhaps Concerto Italiano and its director, Rinaldo Alessandrini, who are most in tune with the musics nature. These are later Vivaldi works, taking into account Le nuove vie, as the albums subtitle. Its not clear exactly where this term came from, but its import is clear; this is music Vivaldi composed after he came in contact with the new stylistic breezes of the 1720s, mostly from Naples, as manifested in the work of composers like Pergolesi, Leonardo Vinci, and Leonardo Leo. Now he was free to break up the texture into periods even more than he had previously and to deal in big operatic strokes like the one that opens the first movement of the Violin Concerto in C major, RV 194. Violinist Boris Begelman is new to the series, but he captures the wit and theatricality of movements of this kind. He also has a fine singing tone in the lovely slow movements, for example, the Largo e spiccato of the Violin Concerto in F major, RV 283. Naives sound, with the recording location specified only as Lonigo, Italy, is a bit live; Alessandrinis punchy work does not need to be backed up by in-your-face engineering, but this is as good a place as any to start with Naives remarkable series.
